Looking at picking up a new set of wheels and personally have a pretty hard time with wheel fitment, decided to turn here after a few days of searching. Car is a 95 TSi AWD. The wheel size I'm looking at would be 17x9.25e35, wrapped in a 235/45r17. I already have a brand new set of tires so that definitely can't change. Car will be lowered, fender roll/pull doesn't intimidate me. Do you guys see any potential problems with rubbing, clearance, or poke? Thanks in advance.

I run 245/40/17 on a 17x9 e 35 and I have had no problems on my 95. Pics in my profile...
If you want a few more I could post them to help you visualize.

I doubt the additional quarter inch would make much of a difference, especially since I'll be on a smaller tire. What wheels are those? The car looks awesome man!

Thanks! They are Avid's I forget the exact model off the top of my head. I agree the 1/4" shouldn't be a big deal. I was skeptical about the 17x9 on the 95-96 since it has less clearance that the 97+ but I found enough people saying they didn't have an issue that I ran with it and now I'm glad I did.

If you're getting a 9"- 9.5" rim don't run a 235 on it, that's "wek". All that wasted rim width just to stretch the tire and run it on the sidewall, get a 17x8+35 for a 235.

BTW. Tire size isn't truly relevant unless you include the actual tire brand/model, especially when you're playing with fitment.

A 235mm tire should be 9.25" wide if it's a true 235mm, compare these 235/45/17 tire specs and you'll quickly realize that one may fit great and the other may rub.
  • 235/45/17 Yokohama ADVAN A046 - Section width 9.3" (236mm)
  • 235/45/17 Yokohoma ADVAN Neova AD08R - Section width 9.4" (238mm)
  • 235/45/17 Toyo Proxes R888 - Section width 9.5" (241mm) <---Actually a 240/45/17
  • 235/45/17 Bridgestone RE760 - Section width 9.3" (236mm)
  • 235/45/17 Hankook Ventus V12 - Section width 9.2" (233mm) <--- Smaller 235/45/17
  • 235/45/17 Toyo Proxes R1R - Section width 9.4" (238mm)
  • 235/45/17 Falken Azenis FK453 - Section width 9.6" (243mm) <--- Almost a 245/45/17
What I'm trying to say is, tire dimensions vary from tire to tire even if they're 235/45/17's. The typical section width is 9.3" (236mm) for a 235 tire but when you're talking about tucking the biggest tire up in a 2g fender well just a few mm is huge. Check the specs on a the tire's you've got first...

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of the tire specs based on model. They're Pilot Sport A/S 3's and according to tire rack the sectin width is 9.3". I'm currently on stock Evo 9 Enkeis. Basically, I'm looking to go wider with the car and was offered a great deal on some wheels matching those specs and wanted to know if my tires would swap over in the mean time.

A true 235/45 tire isn't going to be much stretch on a 17x9 and they'll definitely swap over, you may need to roll the rear fenders and pull the fronts to keep them from rubbing though. Unless, of course, you go with a bit more aggressive alignment and add a bit of camber to them.

I didn't do any rolling to my fenders but I am not as low as some people. I was prepared to roll but ended up not needing to. Take it with a grain of salt...
But post some pics when you decide on what you're gonna run!

Ben, you didn't mention the tire you're running but something else I didn't mention (that changes from tire to tire) is the rolling diameter. Same list as above but show's the rolling diameter too, which can mean you're rubbing or not...

If you notice, some of these vary from 25.2" to 25.4" which is equal to 5mm or almost a 0.20" (nearly 1/4").
  • 235/45/17 Yokohama ADVAN A048 - 25.3" diameter
  • 235/45/17 Yokohoma ADVAN Neova AD08R - 25.2"
  • 235/45/17 Toyo Proxes R888 - 25.3"
  • 235/45/17 Bridgestone RE760 - 25.4"
  • 235/45/17 Hankook Ventus V12 - 25.4"
  • 235/45/17 Toyo Proxes R1R - 25.3"
  • 235/45/17 Falken Azenis FK453 - 25.3"
Ride height is a big factor but you've got to take more than just whats advertised on the tire into account when you're checking fitment, drill down to the actual specs.
