Vancouver,
hey guys, it's one of those old topics but here it goes again as im trying to compare material listed in these forums with my own findings.

i am looking at a set of 17x8 rims to be wrapped in 235/45/17 tires. according to my calculations this setup would give me the wheel width that i want and at the same time retain the factory wheel diameter of 25.4 inches. as you know this setup is pushing the idea of a "clean fit" and im trying to find out if it's actually doable or not. so the main question here is the offset. my car is lowered 1.75" and i do not like rolling fenders or putting spacers on. i have an option of buying two different offsets of the rims that i chose, +40 and +45. after reading numerous threads, it was pretty clear to me that +40 offset should fit just fine. i was pretty convinced it will be fine. however, yesterday i borrowed my buddies 17x8 rim with 40mm offset to try on and was pretty shocked that it was sticking out enough for it to easily rub the rear fender under load. the tire it had on was only 215/50/17 (don't ask) so tire was not an issue. i checked the rear spacing and it had good 3-4cm of clearence with control arm. so this got me to thinking that offset of +45 will be more effective as it will tuck the wheel in a little more and hence will reduce the chance of rubbing. now i also read here about close fits in the back being dangerous because it'll rub the control arm under heavy load/acceleration. so im a little stuck as +45 will probably be a very tight fit. as far as front wheel fitment goes, it think it'll also rub and below pictures should be a good idicator of it. so please let me know what you think of my situation and what the reality of it might be for me.

thanks in advance

george

Either way you'll probably have to roll the rear fenders since you're lowered. I originally put 235/45/17 and I'm lowered 2" I had to roll my rear fenders for it to not rub. My rims have a +45mm offset.

3-4 cm clearance? I don't think so. I could believe half of that.

You will likely have problems with the 45mm offset. It just might fit with certain tires, and then again, it just might not. You are safer with the 40mm. With either you will probably need to roll your fenders. What’s the big deal? Lowering is a pretty serious modification but you shy at bending a little out-of-sight sheet metal?

I am running 235/45/17 BF Goodrich KDW traditional tread on a 17x8 wheel.

No rubbing at all.
