Whats the most retarded thing you've ever done while working on your car.

I just helped a fellow dsmer put on a turbo due to his blown 16g. He also mentioned he may have a blown head gasket and had removed the thermostat to try to keep his temps down. The thought of this escaped me as I removed the radiator cap just after starting it up the first time to check the coolant level. Needless to say I needed a few rags afterwards (mostly for me). For some reason I didn't check the pressure on the upper hose like I usually do. My lucky day.

well i think mine is what i said after about 8 hours of working and it being 4 am..

my friend: i hope i pass inspection with this exhuast
Me: well i guess we could zip tie a kitten to it..

i still havnt lived that one down

oh boy haha i have a stupid one. about 4 years ago and it was probably my 3rd time jacking up the car. looked underneath to line up the jack under the crimps and thought i had it good and jacked up the car all the way. i was wondering why it took so long to jack up the car. until i realized that i had it beneath the crimps and had made a nice sizable dent in my floor right underneath where my feet are. it haunts my footroom to this day, and these 12.5's need to breath dammit. needless to say i was angry as fack at myself, and from then on ive always taken my time with things. but damn i still need to get a sheetmetal hammer or something and fix that. or should i just take it to a shop?

I was doing a boost leak test, and I didn't tighten the tester enough, and after like 15psi it shot out and scared the shit out of me. Yes I jumped like 5 feet back and I couldn't figure out what the boom was for about 10 minutes, until I found the tester 3 bays down my shop.

Bang that bi*** back down. I don't want to see your floorboard flying off Mr. Brian Earl Spilner.

I took off my bumper to mount a fmic on. reversed it out of the driveway, took a look, and my bumper was all twisted up and bent because I forgot to mount the bumper back on. dur...

I was doing a 1G TB swap on my 2G. After a whole day of fighting getting the IM off and porting I finaly get the IM back on the car and stopped there for the night. I stuck a rag in the IM where the TB goes so nothing would crawl up inside overnight. (we had chipmunks that lived in our garage and they got into my wifes air box through the fender and made a nest, so I was not taking any chances). So I wake up the next morning refreshed and ready to go. I open the hood, put the TB on, all the IC pipes, ect.... Feel good. Start the car and it ran like crap. I could barely keep it running. Couldn't figure it out so I took it to a shop. They thought it was the valves. They take the head off, then the IM off and ........ drum roll....... find a rag that got sucked down the number four runner. Boy did I ever feel stupid!

1. Forgot to undo the "blocked wide open" throttle after doing a compression test. Scared the hell out of me when I started it... VROOOOOOM-BAH!! WTF IS GOING ON!!.

2. Got the water pump pulley backwards somehow, even though it had a obvious worn spot in the paint from contact with the other pulley.

3. Neglected to tighten the AC tensioner pulley, which promptly wore a groove into the timing belt cover.

4. Pulled out the fuel rail and injectors, for no good reason, on a Sunday afternoon, and somehow (after painstakingly prying each one out) lost one of the donuts that go between the injector and the manifold. Searched for two hours. Never did find it.

While replacing the harmonic balancer on my car, I had the 4 bolts removed but the pulley just wasn't coming off. So I laid under the car with a hammer and screwdriver slowly tapping it side-to-side so it would shimmy off. Well I guess I forgot my face was directly below the approximately 5lb and very thin-edged pulley, so when it finally popped off it fell straight down and split my upper lip WIDE open.

1) - Had a bottle of Budweiser on left side of Engine Bay - Can of GUMOUT on right side of Engine - drank the Gumout.:barf:

2) Poured about 3 quarts of new Oil in Car before I realized I had yet to reinstall Oil Drain Plug.WTF

ROFLROFLROFL

During a oil change I forgot to put the new oil filter on, after about 1qt of oil all over the drive way i remembered.
Then after to top that off the filter had 2 gaskets that i did not see so after 4qts of oil went all over the drive way.
Every one was yelling at me i was likeWTF dont yell at me :beatentodeath:
Turns out your not suppose to have more then 3 energy drinks a day:coy:

The only thing I can think of is this one time I changed my oil and never thought about the filter gasket sticking to the filter housing. Ended up screwing the new filter and gasket on with the old gasket still on. Nothing major, just made a little mess in the driveway when I started it, and had to replace the filter.

Forget to hook mbc back up and hitting 25+ psi and wonder why it felt so strange before i caught a glimpse of my boost gauge....
Um, how bout forgetting to fill the car up with gas after paying 20dollars at a station
and just driving away absent minded as hell. Perhaps i was on the phone... Iknow Thats not really related to me actually working on the car but i still am pissed to this day that i did that.
Oh ok another... Leaving cell phone in the engine bay on top of valve cover driving around town wondering what happened to my cell phone.... I probably got more...LOL

OK, I've got a couple...

After tearing down my timing belt and water pump for regular maintenance I put it all back together. While doing this I removed the balance shaft belt and tensioner. At the time my tranny was out because of a broken 1-2 shift fork. So when I finally got it back together I was excited so I took it for a drive, thing was awesome, I was happy. After the quick and loud (open downpipe) ride around the block I got back to see a nice oil trail the whole block.... Look under the car to see oil dripping from the timing belt area... Turns out you have to block that tensioner hole. :thumb: I knew this but for some reason forgot to put the bolt back in. No damage done thankfully.

Another time I was replacing my head, got a complete rebuild. Put it back on the car, started it up, ran good, everything seemed ok. Took it for a quick drive, got back and found oil all over the cam gears and that area. Turns out I forgot to put the camshaft seals in... :notgood:

I have many other not so stupid bad ones just like everyone else but those stand out.

You know in the Haynes service manual they say when loosening bolts, always loosen them away from you? Well I was changing the oil in my car, and the oil drain plug was stuck. Naturally I'm a better puller than a pusher cause when I pushed I was pushing myself away from the car. When I was pulling, it suddenly came loose and I punched myself hard in the face.

I also have left tools on my valve cover and drove with them.

I also have butterfingers. Sockets go flying into the deepest crevice of my engine bay.

Once I took out the battery so I could clean that area and clean the battery. When I went to install the battery tie down, my butterfingers slipped and the nut went flying. I never did find that nut. To this day I don't use my tie down.

I was holding a spark plug wire near the block while my friend turned over the engine to check for spark (yes I was young and dumb) It made a few cool sparks, until one arced to my hand and from my thigh to the fender, boy I flew a good 6 ft and landed on my feet but what a jolt! Anyways never try this heh.

Also another stupid thing I did was not torquing the lug nuts on the front passenger wheel. I went to drive it, got about a hundred feet before the lugs started sliding off and the wheel made lots of noise. Pulled over, retorqued it right and drove away.

I've done that many, many times!! ROFL Rolling down the road and your front end just feels loose and gets looser and then BANG, it hits you! SH!T I didn't torque the lugnuts!
