Whats the most retarded thing you've ever done while working on your car.

I used to have a problem of actually tightening things when I'm trying to loosen them. Righty tighty, lefty loosey. :)

I was filling up my rear diff with fluid. Put nearly 1.5 quarts in and still wasn't full. I was all WTF how is it not draining out yet. I looked at the side of the car getting out from underneath. Turns out the car was still jacked up. D'OH

taking a test drive with loose bolts or tools laying somewhere in the engine compartment, oops

Didnt torque the oil pump gear down, put on the timing belt and cover and everything else and remembered that the gear wasnt torqued, so everything had to come off.

Definitely any one of the hundred times I thought I could be careful enough:

"I don't need anything over the fender, I'll just make sure I lift the IC pipe well above it when I (gets caught because BOV line still attached)...clank, shit!"

"I'll just use this screwdriver to pry off the weatherstripping, if I'm careful enough it won't chip the...damn, ####ing damnit. IDIOT!"

"Now, it's made of plastic so don't squeeze the pliers too much...CRAAAACK, damnit to hell!!!"

It goes on and on. If I had a nice car I wouldn't be able to even change my own oil; something would get scratched, chipped or bent and I'd be super pissed. I'm at the point where I don't have to give a F. Door ding? Shopping cart? Rock chips? Sure I'll have another.

Drove around with tools in that fender/hood spot LOL
YIKES! The dumb ones are coming back to me now: one time I drove a few miles to a muffler shop with a wrench on the nut and a ratchet on the bolt...of the cat-exhaust flange bolt. I tried to play it off like they were stuck on there and that's why I needed their help (but really I couldn't get the bolts undone), but they just laughed at me, charged me $5 and cut off all the bolts and gave me my tools back. :sosad:

ROFL I've done that a few times.

I'll be driving down the road and hear CLANK clink clink clink clink. I've lost so many 10mm wrenches it's not even funny.

I have a habit of using the little tray thing at the nose of the car, you know the one between the bumper and radiator, as tool and bolt storage, well on more than one occasion i have opened the hood to find tools i thought to have been lost just sitting there right where i left them god knows how many days before.

I let my wife help me.

You think I'm kidding. You think, "Gee, Eric, you shouldn't say that's a retarded thing to do, what with such a helpful wife and all. You should be thankful." ....

Me- "Shine the light over there."
Her- "Here?"
Me- "No, here where my finger is pointing."
Her- "Okay."
Me- "No, shine it where my finger was pointing."
Her- "I am."
Me- "No, shine it right there, right where my finger is touching."
Her (after 10 seconds)- "Are you almost done? It's hot out here."
Me- "Yeah, almost done. Now shine the light back where it was and leave it there."

Her expressions while helping me ranges from  to :coy: to  to  .

i have a story nothing like anyone else's. i was working on under the hood of my spyder and i had the top down. after i was done for the night i put the top back up. i went out of town that weekend and for 4 of the hottest days of the summer my car sat in the driveway. i lived on 20 acres in the country so when there was a little foul odor upon arriving home we iddnt think anything of it-our dogs are always bringing a dead possum or rabbit around. still my car sat in the driveway, but when the smell got worse over the next 2-3 days we invetigated. opened the trunk and pulled off the cover and there was Kailyn our puffy bloated leaking reaking cat. he got himself stuck between the back seat and the trunk under the convertible top boot.
i claimed it with insurance because everything in the interior was ruined. with the money i swapped all the tan interior parts with black and gray and got new racing seats out of it. so if you really want new interior, all you have to do is sacrifice your cat

Step 1) Decide you want to get new bolts in your exhaust

Step 2) Jack the car up and realize you dont have the right sized bolts

Step 3) Drive to autozone to get parts while enjoying being a douchebag with a loud exhaust

Step 4) Go back home and jack the car up

Step 5) Use the exhaust to pull yourself to the middle of the car

Step 6) Scream as you realize the exhaust is still hot.

MY front left fender has a few dents from when I was angry and punched the shit out of it.

something similar happened to me. i locked myself out of the car with the keys sitting in the center console. i therefore kicked both door handles to see if the door latches would unhook. the dents still remain.

I didn't run when I saw tim with the needle nose pliers doing I forgot what. I was finishing putting on the bolts for his strut bar and he was doing something with the POSITIVE TERMANIAL OF THE BATTERY, and it didn't click til sparks started flying. His mom always asks me if I know why one of the ends of their needle nose pliers is shorter than the other, and I've always gotta lie.

Dude, you can shove a thin stick through the window and hit the switch..

Our cars are ridiculously easy to enter.

Why the #### wouldn't you use jack stands? That really pisses me off.
I was under a car one day, on jackstands. We had an earthquake. Nothing much, but enough to point out that even jackstands aren't anything much.
I think that was the day I was fast.

That would definitely be the day to choose.
