1G Whats the best way to replace my oil pump?

Hey everyone, new to DSMtuner, i've got a 92 FWD 5spd n/t laser and i was wondering if i could replace my oil pump with the engine in the car. Any help would be awesome i searched all over the web looking for answers. Thanks!

Yes its possible, I have done one before while it was still in the car... but it sucks. Does your car still have all the timing belt covers and everything on it? If it doesnt you should be able to do it faily easy.

The covers and belts are already off. The guy i bought the car from said the oil pump needs to be replaced, but it spins smoothly, is there something else i should be looking for? What might have led him to believe it wasn't pumping oil?

Talked to the P/O a little while ago, he told me he replaced the shaft seal twice and both times they failed therefore causing a bad leak. I should have the new oil pump early next week, ill let you guys know how it goes.

Also, do you have to drop the pan to get to the oil pickup bolts? Or will it come out with the pickup attached?

You have to drop the pan, and then drop the engine down in the front enough to slide the balance shafts out of the engine as you pull the front cover.

Im in the process of doing the same with my 1g awd. It is being a pain for me as i got to remove the transfer, downpipe, three motor mounts, oil pan and hopefully it will slide out. Good news is its gonna be close to being out already so if need be you could ###### pull it easily.

No need to change the oil pump any longer, car spun a rod bearing . . looks like im going to sell the car and buy a Tsi down the road. Any one interested in purchasing my fwd 5spd laser? Pm me for a picture if your interested
