I was curious about c/f hoods to. Didnt know if VIS was a cheep brand or not  Now I think im going to stick with VIS :thumb:

im sorta surprised to hear that you guys like vis. everything that my people in atlanta have said about vis is negative. ive seen some pretty crappy stuff come out of their doors.

i was more along the lines of seibon, or fiber images

anyone have one of those???

can you paint c/f hoods???

i like the wieght of them, i just hate the look

so i was j/w if you could paint them..?

:dsm:

yes they can be painted but the amount of money to buy one and paint it is not worth the little weight youll be saving IMO. but to answer your question, yes they canbe painted.

They can be painted but since carbon fiber is a bunch of layers of material, the painted hood will look "wavy" at best.

IMHO, CF hoods look great on a black or white car. Im not too crazy for it on other color cars.

Yes! Not painting a carbon fiber hood is like painting all the walls in your house but the big one in the living room to show everyone what kind of drywall you used. No one cares, it looks like shit and out of place.

Don't bother getting one for the weight aspect. They don't do anything performance-wise.

I have a VIS hood also. It fits excellent. Price was competitive. I am happy with the purchase.

That is so not true. All decent carbon fiber hoods come with an extremely smooth, clear coated finish. I know that some of the cheap eBay-style carbon fiber hoods are wavy because of cheap construction. But any decent body shop know that they would have to sand the waves out of the clear coat before painting it. My VIS hood dodnt need to be sanded, and the paint on it looks excellent. :dsm:

Honestly, I know everyone here seems to have a hardon for VIS hoods, but I don't like them at all for a few reasons:

1) weight - the reason you are getting a carbonfiber hoon in the first place. VIS takes a fiberglass hood, and wraps Carbon fiber around it. Sure its a lot lighter than metal, but a real CF hood will probably be 3-5lbs lighter.

2) weave - Ive NEVER seen a VIS hood with a perfect weave. They've all been good to acceptable but they all have flaws.

3) durability - back to that carbon fiber over fiberglass thing, fiberglass is very brittle, and as such tends to break easily.

Only CF hood I would buy is Fiber Images. real Carbonfiber (not layed over fiberglass; at night, with a light shining behind it, you can see the light through it), ALWAYS perfectly weaved, and, you can drive overtop of it, jump on it, what ever you want, and they don't crack. yes they are more money, but yes, they are worth it.

YES!! thats what a good carbon fiber hood should look like from underneath!! :thumb:

I have a VIS Carbon hood and it is flawless, fits perfect and not a single wave or anything on it.

so did you guys deal directly with vis or did you go through another company???
I got mine through some company on eBay that sold alot of VIS.

i dunno guys 495 for a fiber images hood, thats pretty good.
Plus about $120 for shipping......
My VIS was a little less than $495 shipped.

I am gonna stick in here and put my chin out..I actually got a APC CF hood and damn my surprise..but it fitted perfectly..was really good in quality and its a genuine CF hood..no fiberglass there. I was sceptical at first when the company that sponsors me said it was APC but it was really really good!!! I couldnt be more satisifed with another brand than with this one:)I have seen alot of CF hoods of various quality and this was definitly one of hte best Ive seen so far.
Now I cracked it cause I didnt lock the hood pins but thats another question ;)

a couple of things about your post...
1) APC and the word GOOD shouldn't be used in the same paragraph...
2) if it was pure CF and no fiberglass backing, how did you crack it? you can stand on a pure CF hood and cause no damage to it.

just my opinion.

Umm... I think what he means by that is he didnt lock the hood pins and the hood flew up and smashed his window.

Pretty true. The hood flew up and cracked both my hood and my windshield. Reason it cracked...eventhough its pure carbonfiber is that the frame underneath cracked ...the hood itself was no damage really to it.

As far as APC and quality goes..I know its not known for good quality but this was one of the best hoods I seen regarding both finish and fittings. I know alot of ppl ..and I mean alot, with hoods from different places and this was a very very good hood..period!

my vis cf hood flew up... didnt crack my windshield thank god.... but was still pretty pissed about my hood. i forgot to latch it. no mechanical failures, just my own stupidity.
