I search this topic and couldnt find what im looking for.

since i now have link and gm maf I no longer have a need to have the afm.

with that said im going to be fabbing a CAI to feed my e3 16g.

the size of the 16g feed is only 2" YET I see all the aftermarket intake flaring the intake from 2" to bigger piping.

what is the advantages to this when the comp intake size is only 2".

I was thinking of running a small universal intake (2") to where the stock SMIC use to be and running a pipe which the diameter is 2".

seems like a good idea for "constant" flow. or would it be better to just have a "bottle neck" (turbo comp intake)

what do you guys think?

btw the IC pipes will be 3" just because the FMIC kit that I got came with 3" piping so why not.

As long as the piping is as big as the turbo or larger it is fine, you really want to get a filter with some decent square inches. I always try to run the large nearly foot long k&n filter due to the large filter surface. Lots of places sell "cold air intakes" with tiny filters on them so be aware of that.

I am running a 3" CAI on my 16g. Used aluminum tubing all the way to the filter, and the filter is down were the sidemount used to be. I am also running a conical AFE air filter that is 9" long.

We made ours out of 3" aluminum tubing. It ran under the frame rail and out the front bumper. It was a solid 2-3 mph gain everytime we went to the track.

Compared to what size piping?

Are you saying that a 3" intake pipe won't see any gains compared to a 2" pipe when the turbo intlet is just 2"?

This is basically what I'm asking and yea I forgot about the filter. Thanks for the reminder I will be getting one of those "whale penis" filter LOL

I would opt for 3" but I go a bunch of 2" aluminum piping leftover so if it won't hurt performance I rather spend the money elsewhere

That was compared to none at all. We would Run out of time when we go to the track and it would be off for the first run or two. As soon as we put it back on we would see the 2-3mph increase.
