What should I look for in a 2G? '95 TSI

Alright, I have the opportunity to get a '95 TSI w/ AWD. I'm not quite sure if the car has a lsd or not. The chassis has 110k on it and the motor is rebuilt/new by Jasper with 20k on it - warrantied until 75k. The car has the original turbo on right now but is in the process of getting a stock t25 turbo w/ about 35k on it put on. I'm not sure if the rims are stock or not, they're 17's wrapped in kuhmos I believe. Greddy exhaust. Gauges. I'm not quite sure what other performance mods there are, I do believe it has upgraded turbo piping and may have an aftermarket clutch in.


The car is going to be a daily driver. I can't have anything that breaks down constantly, and if thats going to be the reality of this car...I can't buy it.


Since the car has the warrantied motor and all, I dont have to worry about the whole crank walk issue, is there anything else with these cars that I should be looking for?

I want a daily driver that handles decently and is reliable. If it runs 14's in a straight line, I'd be happy.

What do you guys think I should be paying for, for something like this? No major dents or dings and in good condition from what I know right now.


Another random question, what kind of gas mileage do you guys get in terms of mpg? Thanks a lot folks!

1) rust
2) vac lines
3) do a compression test
4) exhaust smoke (check color)
5) just drive the car and look for signs of an accident

o and btw, you should buy MY 95 tsi 84k miles and ran 13.0

Yeah but for how much though, and I dont want to touch the car if it doesnt have a rebuilt motor because of the none issues.


And alright, so just basic used car buying stuff. I didnt know if to look for uv joints going bad or some shit besides crankwalk that the car was prone too.

So how many mpg do you get to your car?

Is that going to be the reality of it, even if I have a new motor in there? I thought all their problems lay in the crankwalk issue. As i said the motor is a new motor by a reputable company Jasper and warraantied for another 55,000 miles.

not the best advice. With a rebuilt motor and if you do not mod the car it will last. Shoot, I bought a 92 laser with 110k on stock motor stock everything and it runs great. A lot of people think dsms are prone to blow up all the time. Well, if you throw a big turbo and crank the boost, it could happen a lot, but if left stock, they last well. I would definately buy a 95 tsi if the motor had a warranty. Why not? Anyways, if you plan to leave the car mostly stock, I'd say buy it.

Oh, and as for mpg, my 97 gsx got decent mpg unless I drove around boosting a lot...which I did. If you take it easy, It will get around that of a n/a 2.0...but takes premium.

Alright that was what I was looking for. I dont think I'm going to up the boost at all, maybe in the future have better pipes or a better flowing turbo system...but I'd probably do mostly suspension mods?


How do these things handle? I've never driven an AWD eclipse/talon, a Subara 2.5RS was the only AWD car I ever drove and I was impressed with the handeling.

im sellin my 95 for $7500 obo- i can get 22+mpg but i usually dont. its in the classifieds under my name- btracer

AWD dsms handle pretty well. I think 1g's handle a little better, but 2g's handle well too. When I had my 97 gsx I could whip it around pretty well. It was lowered, but only with springs, not coilovers. They understeer a little but if you get on the gas they can oversteer and take corners fast. They only downfall is awd dsms are a little on the portly side, so it won't cut corners like a miata, but they are fun in the twisties.
