St. Louis,
Well I've stumbled upon a 1990 Laser RS Turbo for a great price, but the only problem is that it ran very rough or even not at all sometimes. I went to look at it and did a compression test on the engine. Everything was good expect the #2 cylinder which came up with 90psi. I added some oil into the cylinder and it went up to 120psi. According to my test it shows that the piston rings are worn. What do you guys recommed to fix it? I don't mind pulling the engine or anything like that, but will it need a rebuilt or can I somehow just replace the piston rings? Also how much will all this cost me? And the plans are to repair the car and then sell it to make some money since I'm getting it for dirt cheap :D

Thanks :thumb:

u can just replace the rings, but u need to re hone the cylinders.

If youare going to pull it and do that one hole you might as well just get a nice fresh rebuild. Put some .20 over 2G pitons on the big rods and have a fresh motor. The honing and rering is a bit of a quick fix and not the best but it will work fine.

u can just put new rings and hone it and be fine while your there thow u might as well do somethign worth taking the engine out for like new bearings of pistons

Dont forget valve seals in the head are also a cause of low compression

if he would have added the oil and it remaned at 90psi then it could be valve seals. Since it went up with oil that points towards rings

To a point, 90 + 30 =120 Now thats not stock compression number, I beleive stock 1g turbo's are around ?160? which means yes rings are worn, but so are the valve seals, I suggest rebuild time.

Thanks for the replies... Looks like I'll probably end up getting this car. What would be a good place to purchase these parts from? A stock rebuild is all I'm interested in, but who has the best prices?
