What is water injection?

I was curious about what exactly water/alky injection is, and how it works? Also, what are the typical HP results of a water or alky injection kit?

so i understand now that it assist's the cooling of the forced induction system, and never asked about the recommendation for a novice user. But...what exactly is water/alky injection? By that i mean--------> How does it work? What are the results of water/alky injection? Where is it installed? Whats the difference between water and alky? Is it constantly injected, or do you press a button or what? Should you use it with nitrous, or just high boost or both or neither?

Im asking for more specific detail, so please if your not going to answer my question(s)...don't post anything. If you dont have enough time to write out an answer for my questions, then why did you take the time out of your life to say what you just said????

Water injection is able to effectively raise the octane of your fuel, so that you can advance the timing more. It is good for supressing knock. What it does is when the water is sprayed as a fine mist into a hot intake charge is that it vaporizes, reducing the temperature by quite a bit. Reducing intake temperatures is good for preventing detonation.

You can have water injection come on whenever you want.. Most people have a boost sensor so that it activates at a certain PSI.

It also has the good side of effect of "steam cleaning" your engine when you use it, so that carbon deposits don't have a chance to build up.

reading through this thread will help you understand a lot more about what W/I does, as well as alcohol and methanol injection.

You can piece together your own W/I kit or use kits that have been assembled like coolingmist. It basically requires a pump, tank of your liquid, nozzle, and sensors to determine when you want to activate it. You can use your windshield washer tank if you desire. Windshield washer fluid seems to be a good medium to use for WI, just be careful to clean out the nozzle occassionally, as there may be deposits left behind. Be sure to use distilled water only, not tap water. Also, keep an eye on your tank to make sure you don't run out of water.

Typically, the WI nozzles are installed after the intercooler, before the throttle body is also a good place. Pre-intercooler is sometimes used, but also counteracts some of the effectiveness of the intercooler.

The amount of water you want to inject is about 25% of the fuel you are putting in. So choosing a nozzle the size of one of your fuel injectors would be perfect. Alcohol and methanol use different amounts however.

Water injection requires some tuning to get the best results, so HP gains will be different for everyone. But I believe that it is a beneficial system to have. Even if you were just using it as a safeguard against knock.

Agreed. Using the search can usually get you an answer before you can finish posting the question. Try to use all of your available resources before asking a question. It saves time and space on the forums.

It's fine! ill forgive ya man i did actually make a few attempts to search though, but i kept coming up with threads that had people posting knock results, and discussions about more "technical" stuff. And i figured before i got into the "technical" part of it, i wanted to know the simple basic things first.

Dont worry though...your not the only person who gets pissed at people who ask questions without even attempting to look!!! I know im still rated as a "newbie" but i do know that it is better to search first before posting a thread.

Ive only had one person give me a rep. point and it seems like ive actually helped quite a few people, even though i will admit that alot of my 157 post have had to do with questions that i asked but still! and im not asking for charity points here, i just want to know what i have to do to get out of being a noob so i can actually write threads and answer questions in others categories than the "noob" section. I have actually PMed quite a few people, that have asked questions in other areas, that i couldnt answer by posting a thread! this sucks!!!

so what about the nitrous/intercooler injection??? Is it basically like instead of injecting your N20 close to your motor, you just inject it into the IC for better cooling?

Those are usually sprayers for the outside of the intercooler to reduce the temperature of the intercooler surface. It does have some effect and cools the intake charge, but is not nearly as effective as a well tuned water injection setup. It's also expensive to buy nitrous. You can achieve a similar effect by spraying water on the outside of the IC also, the evaporating water draws away heat
