What happened to this turbo? (PICS!)

Here is the turbo that just shelled for no reason. I checked and there is plenty of oil pressure on the bottom of the housing where the feed is coming from, and there wasn't any foreign chunks of metal in the turbo ???

I have no idea I bought it used of a forum.

I doubt it was lean, we just had it on the dyno 2 weeks ago. The only thing I can figure out, is it was a cheap turbo or something?

If there was a 60-1 compressor on that turbo. The thrust system is way undersized.
DING. We have a winner.

One tiny oiling hole isn't going to cut it with a compressor that big and heavy.

I am seeing a little oil contamination evidence on the journal bearing in the center of this photo:

...so to me this turbo failed for two reasons- possible oil contamination, and improper thrust parts installed.

Deff ran too hot or lean. Use GOOD oil and chance every 2000 ide suggest tops on a turbo engine. Seen wear like that if peoples used synthetic in their car and then cheaped out and ran regular oil after it can potentially wear and possibly blow parts and or ## engine.

I honestly doubt that any different oil type would of prevented this. What justin says sounds the most likely.

Car has never overheated, and if anything runs rich. The oil system is going to be flushed before the new turbo is put on. I'm gonna chalk this up as a crappy turbo that gave out because of cheap parts.

Make sure you're using an oil that has a high ZDDP content as well. Stop using anything you can buy at WalMart aside from maybe Diesel oils, and start using something like Brad Penn, Royal Purple, etc. in a weight of your choice.

Does that include the royal purple 10-30 that wal-mart sells? Don't tell me Royal Purple has a cheap mix just for wally world...

It's just regular $10+/qt Royal Purple, not the Royal Purple XPR or whatever that has been reported to have a high zinc/phosphorous content. I've never seen a print out/chart for regular OTS royal purple.

None of the WalMarts near me sell any type of racing oil...just SN-rated motor oil, which is crap for our cars.

I can almost guaratee you're not going to find the right oil at any high-volume retail store or parts store. Most of this oil has "Offroad Use Only" printed right on the label, and these companies don't want to deal with lawsuits.

i like mobile 1 or ams oil. never let me down
Not to turn this into another oil thread (or one about proper grammar, for that matter), but you should really look in to the zinc levels of production Mobil 1 before making such a blanket statement. It's not the same oil they were selling 10 years ago. ;)

+1 There are many oiling threads stating this. :)

If the manufacturer build cheap turbos, no matter what type of oil you run will not save that turbo. My buddy ran royal purple in his fully built gsr and still blew his engine. In this case, seem like poor craftman. That's why there's ebay turbo and then there's turbo like Greddy and HKS. To name some. I spend the money on a well known turbo and run it with mobile 1 oil before I buy an ebay turbo and run it with Royal Purple.

Maxlife works for me, considering I only drive 3,000 miles or less a year. :p

I run valvoline vr1 synthetic (black bottle) and drive the piss outta my car. No issues ever. It's great oil. Gonna switch to rotella synthetic 5-40 soon because it's a lot cheaper LOL

Oils you get off the shelf today have very low levels of ZDDP (Zinc). The problem is that ZDDP tends to destroy catalytic converters so the government has mandated that all companies run a low level of ZDDP to receive the API certification.

In the case of this turbo ZDDP would not have made a big difference as it is a protective additive to help Steel to Steel contact. I will actually provide a barrier to net let them touch. If that turbo did have a 60-1 wheel it really should have been running a upgraded thrust bearing system that uses a steel thrust plate and larger collar. And in that case the ZDDP would have helped.
