I just bought an AWD '96 Talon with 77,000 miles, and I think I'm going to change the timing belt right away. What else should I do while I'm tearing stuff apart? Oil pump, water pump, etc? Anything else I should be sure to do? I've got a pcv, a fuel filter, and new plugs already. Do people usually change the fuilds in the tranny, transfer case, and/or differential? Thanks for not hating.

Thanks. :| I searched quite a bit, but I'm not wondering:
A: whether or not I should change it
B: what happens if I don't change it, or
C: how to change it

I was actually wondering (see my original post) if there are other things that it just makes sense to do while I'm doing the timing belt. I was hoping who'd been there before would give me some insight, like "I really wish I would have just changed my _____ while I was in there..."

Yes, you should do the timing belt, and Yes, there are other thigns 'while you're there" that should be done to. I'd suggest the water pump, balance shaft elimination, new timing belt auto-tensioner, and new idler pulleys. YOu can get these either through buying kits, or finding each piece individually.

As for anytime you buy a new car, fluids should be changed. I do difs, tranny, oil, and coolant.

Okay. From the page I gave you:
"If your engine has high mileage, it is a GOOD idea to replace the waterpump, timing belt tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and balancer belt tensioner pulley while doing the belts."

But now, you're on your own.
Thanks for not hating.
