What EGT temps does everyone run?

Cant open the above link. All I know is when my EGT hits 1650 the motor start shuting down.

I'm sure the fact that I suck at tunning has something to do with this. Understanding what cuases high EGT's and how to correct them is what I'm after.

High timing or a lean mixture are a couple of things that could be doing this.

Yes I have a triple gauge pod, yes I tune by knock sum, timing, fuel trims, air:fuel. Yes, I have more gauges than a triple can hold. The reason I'm asking this question is because I simply don't want to fry my engine. When a dsm guru tells you not to go over 1400 wot you tend to listen.

I wouldnt quite call him a guru if 1400 is what he's telling you. My car runs 1400ish on the highway. WOT is in the 1600* range.

RRE, who I would concider to be guru's, says to keep it under 900* celcius which is 1650*. I keep it safe and make sure its about or under 1600.

Well, he may not be so hot at tuning.. But I've seen him put together ripped apart 4G63s in a week. When I say ripped apart, everything was out except tranny and block. Missing all the screws n little crap.

32 advance? Up the boost alittle and tune some more.

Thats at cruise dude, I already have a boost creep problem now. Seems like the more I do to this car to fix a problem it creats 10 more. Run out and view your timing at cruise(70-80mph) and tell me what it is. I have a feeling its nowere near 32.

I checked my logs on my PDA and I'm at 39 cruising. BTW, disregard my up the boost post, I didn't read close enough.

To fix the boost creep all you need to do is install a 34mm wastegate flapper and port the turbo wastegate passage. An external o2 dump would be wise as well (I have one.)

I wouldnt say "wise", but it could help. Seems like the biggest problem with creep is in the turbine housing where its easier for the exhaust to go straight than to turn. Personally, I cant stand the sounds of an external, but thats a different topic.

Cruising timing sounds about right, and shouldnt really change much from stock unless your running large injectors with just and AFC.

Low settings though on an AFC can reak havok on the EGTs though if you get too lean.

Here are 2 guides to follow when getting the settings right.

Read those, they should help some.

Ok i feel better now. Yea I have the bigger flapper valve just have to install it. Can't keep it below 20psi. Time, time, time always need more time.

Thanks for the posts I have the MAFT plus AFC and I think that is my problem. Time to goto DSMLink.

I have an MAFT and SAFC also, it's not causing any problems for me. I'm getting knock problems but that's because I have no AFPR.

I understand you don't want to fry your engine. Who would. No offense to you or the guru your talking about, but if you just read the link (this one actually works) you'll see that there are many other guru's who will say that monitoring egt's is a waste of time. So take your pick. Since you have the gauge you might as well use it and take it for what it's worth if it makes you feel better. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41270&highlight=egt

I try to stay under 1950*F, but I'm also running a custom head.

Ya, with a custum head you could probably get away with that ;)

Yeah, it's real custom. I had it made specially for me last season, costed $93,000 to have made after development, but I plan to run 6's in the quarter with it. Just need a little juice :D

While at cruise speeds most modded DSMs will see about 1400-1500 in the EGTs. The same DSMs will probably see around 1550 at WOT when properly tuned. Im also on the side of using EGT temps to tune(or anything close to tuning) is useless. There are alot of variables(probe/wiring) in there and there is no way you can tune with an EGT temp. If you tune the car right, your EGTs will fall right into place. The main reason I have one is because during everyday driving and the accasional street race, its good to have that piece of mind to see if your topping the 1600* range or not. Not everyone has the logger going at all times.
