Also if you don't keep it clean or changed regularly, it will eventually start oiling down your engine bay.

If you got enough blow-by. I need to change mine about every 9 months or so.

Agreed. They can make a real mess of things if they are not taken care of. The correct way to take care of this is to install of catch can. This way the oil doesnt go in your engine bay and you can measure the amount of oil being sent out.

I agree with you...this is the "catch can" I use. Changed with every oil change.

so what exactly does it do besides make your engine a mess and cause you to have to replace it every nine months...I'm looking to find out what the point/advantages are of this breather you know...

I would say there are no advantages. Unless you count cleaning oil off your engine as advantageous.
Just run a rubber hose from that nipple to a catch can or to the ground and be done with it. Preferably the latter.

A quote from the link I gave in post 7...

"A quick review of why you need a catch can in the first place. On our cars, the valve cover is vented back into the intake track of the turbo system (after the MAS) by a breather hose. Presumably this is to relieve any excess pressure without losing air that has already been metered by your MAS. Because your engine usually has a bit of blow-by or frothy oil coming out of that hose though, over time your intake system will get coated in oil. This eventually coats the inside of your intercooler with a oily film, reducing its cooling efficiency and (worse yet) making your car that much slower. Do you need any more reasons to install a catch can then? (BTW, this install will also work for a 1G.)"

The filter you mentioned is for removing the line/hose from the intake track thus removing that potential for oil buildup inside the intake track reducing the efficiency. As stated previously the correct way to solve this problem is with a catch can vented back to the intake "snorkel" so you don't loose potential metered air.

If you use DSMLink and have been on the forums you would have noticed many minor idle issues related to "venting" this line with a filter as shown. With DSMLink you can actually compensate for this with dedicated Airflow sliders.
