what does this part do?

ok my 1998 ESI Eagle talon (NV T350) manual transmission was making this horrid noise, it was intermittent and sounded like a chattering scraping.

so anyway we pulled the transmission and split it to find...... oh yeah after pulling the transmission we started the car and the noise was gone so it definitely in the transmission.

everything looks fine, gears bearings all of it but their is a piece of thin metal that was loose on the shaft shaped like a corkscrew.... it kinda looks like it might help with lubrication but tbh have no idea?

anyway it's messed up and we believe it's the culprit but we cannot figure out what it does or why it's in the transmission at all........ anyway after banging it around were thinking pitch it and put the transmission back in the car.

does anyone have any idea what this part could be or does?

So you saw this piece after removing the gearbox, i take it was hanging on your input shaft? must be the Throw Out bearing?

editr did you open up the Gearbox..i.e remove the rear cover? was it the "wavey spring washer" under the 5th gear?

ok well.... it was a twisty piece of metal that resides in the for lack of a better term mainshaft with all the gears on it or center shaft.

I didn't pull it and after I started this thread I drove over to have a look..... I put it back in, it looks like it serves to basically stir oil within the shaft for the bearings.

anyway I don't believe it could be causing the noise we are hearing...... a damned elusive noise now as we put a brand new clutch with release bearing (modular pilot replaced with it).

anyway this project has turned very annoying, I replaced most of the car then after my wife pissed and moaned we got a new SRT-4 Caliber and now this Talon is destined to be sold..... but it's unsellable with the noise but to find the noise is killing any chance of ever getting even half the coin invested in the car.

just can't seem to track it, 6 opinions all say transmission but when we opened it, it's all good and can't find a source...... if you've ever heard a fan bearing go it's a higher pitched version of that or if you've ever free spun a bearing from your garage door and it starts to chatter... well that is the noise, you could also call it a scraping / chattering sound.

F'ing annoying just can't track it.
