My car overheats and the coolant tank is higher than it was before not to mention its boiling. I checked the oil it's okay. I took off the oil cap and the camshafts have stains on them, amost like rust but permanent and tiny tiny little nicks on the edges. I drove it all the way back another 2 hrs while it was overheated. I dought thats good and I'm worried because this is my every day car. The car runs slow and tired now. I wanted to know if that wear on the camshaft is normal wear/tear, or did I mess something up?Today i started the car and filled up the coolant which was empty and it didnt heat up, but can I drive like it never happened?

Note- I happened to have a camera on me I waited around for like 2 hrs for it to cool off so i took a picture. there you can see some of the nicks and stains it has bigger ones on the other side of it.

Thanks for checkn it out

get a compression test done, how abd was it overheating while you were driving for 2hours!!

Possibly popped the headgasket, but I'm not to sure whether or not you would be able to drive anywhere if you destroyed it....
maybe while youre doin a ompresion test, do a coolant pressure test...
good luck

prolly a blown hg. you can drive a fairly long time with a minor blown hg. but get a comp test, how many miles you have on it what you boostin?

Your overheating problem could be a variety of things, and by driving it for 2 hours overheating (I assume at near-highway speeds), you could very well have blown your head gasket. Possible overheating causes:

1) Thermostat malfunction
2) Radiator cap failure
3) Coolant leak
4) Water pump failure

The CAMSHAFT in the picture (as opposed to the CRANKSHAFT, of which you have one at the bottom of your engine), looks normal, aside from being completely clean of oil (which is not a good thing, but I assume you wiped it off for the picture). I don't think you have a problem with your camshafts.

Is your car blowing white smoke out of the exhaust? If so, you almost assuredly have a blown headgasket. Have a compression test done on your cylinders (do it yourself if you can, or have it done by a professional). If you have very low compression, you most likely blew your headgasket, which could either have been the cause of your overheating problem, or a result of it. I would get that fixed first, then address the overheating problem, because you won't have an accurate gauge of engine temp. with a blown head gasket in any case.

I would say your car is over heating from a bad thermostat mine went about 3 weeks ago adn the car would over heat cuz it wasnt lettign the water flow threw and then it would all flow into the resivoir/overflow tank and it would be boiling then i figured out what it was its really cheap and easy to fix.

Hey guys first off thanks for the replies. Helps me out a lot. I'm a little worried because of what you said (joemathews) that I cleaned off the camshaft, I actually didnt. It's always like that and I checked the oil at least 3-4 times that day and almost everyother day to tell you the truth. My car doesnt blow white smoke no smoke at all. I will defenitely do a compression test this week.

Thanks

What oil do you run ? Thinner oil runs off faster.

I added some PTFE once.. tell ya best stuff I ever seen, I had to break down my head a week later, of not even running. And STILL all the moving parts were teflon coated.. nice stuff :thumb:

I used valvoline Fully syn. but I'll give that a try. its 5-30

it doesnt matter what the first number is on the oil if its 5w-30 the 5w means 5 weight in winter but its still a 30 weight oil in the summer. 10w-30 is fine and thats whats recommended you go a thicker oil sure its a heavier weight but also makes more friction and slows everything down. a thicker weight oil is usually used to fix probs temporilarly(sp). i know many drag races i mean people in the tens that run 10-30 but its synth thats why. i would just be worried about if you dammage the hg cause when you over heat a car especially 2 hours it deterates the hg.

i would say 95% a headgasket...i gotta ask...why on earth did you drive it for two hours while it was overheated? if it turns out to be a headgasket, make sure you have the head checked for strightness and planed if it needs to be, because the heat would most definatly have warped the aluminum head...i just did a hg on mine, same symptoms as you, althought idk about the cam issue...
:dsm:

I had to drive it since I was 2 hrs away from home and I defenitely didn't have money for a toe truck. I had just spent some $ for a FMIC and right side door, long story, but either way my 6 bolt is nearing so maybe thats why I ran it for another 2 hrs. :shhh: Just kidding I just really had no other option. I let it cool as much as possible through out the 2 hrs about every rest stop on the way back.
