Ok so I was attempting to remove my flywheel, but the previous owner tack welded the bolts down. So I took a grinder to them. I got 3 bolts down and I heard the sound of a bolt snapping, no bolts snapped but the crank turned over. The 1/2" driver I was using to hold the crank pully had fallen out and I had a bolt in between the camshafts that didn't move. To put it simply, the bottom end turned over while the head/camshafts did not. The motor is out of the car I was just wondering where I should look first? I have a parts motor so hopefully I didn't f it up to bad.

well from what im getting is your bottom end moved and top stayed i would have to say bent valves at least upload some pics on exactly what happened and check your timing. The first thing i would do is pull and check the bottom side of the head/top of the pistons make sure they didnt touch.

Just double check your timing marks. It's pretty hard to bend valves by hand and I doubt you would here one snap. If anything you might have cracked a cam gear, snapped a tooth off the belt, or just heard the tool hit the ground. I wouldn't start tearing it apart based on a sound.

And on another note, who the heck tack welds flywheel bolts?! Red Loctite and 90 ft/lbs of torque is more than sufficient. That makes me worried that the previous owner was having problems with them staying in...

Im not saying he bent valves but its worth checking if the enigne is out out of the car might as well do all maintenance its alot easier out of the car than in it.Plus if he spun the bottom without the top moving that = no good any way u look at it double check all marks etc before you pull the head balance shaft belts etc.

LOL! I though the exact same thing when reading that. Some people should NEVER be allowed near a car!

I do not see how it is possible to move the crank with the timing belt on with tension and, there is a bolt binding the cams!!! it sounds to me like it skipped a tooth or something and the bolt did not hold. The only other thing it could be is the key on both of the cams broke which is just about impossible to do as the timing belt will break first and that would take a LOT of torque.

On another note, as said earlier, it would be a good time to reseal the front casing, check bearings, and check your oil pump housing if the BS were deleted. Unless the motor has been rebuilt very recently, replace all your seals as well and have the motor rebalanced too.

Well, if he had the timing marks lined up and the cams didn't move (he said the bolt didn't move) then I think it's going to be quite difficult to bend the valves since they would all be closed.

Ok so it didn't jump timing, the bolt fit perfectly between the gears. They teeth would have snapped first. It seems that the crank is spinning more freely than before this happened. And the crank only turned a bit maybe 1/2 a turn. I still have to grind at some flywheel bolts and get these b****** out so I can put it in a engine stand and check it out.

i would definitely drop that oil pan and check it out you could have problems and not realize it i mean if they were welded i definitely take it apart to see what kind of job they did on the rest of the engine better safe than sorry

This is not making any sense. The only way the crank can turn with the belt still on and the cams did not turn is for the belt to skip time at the crank pulley, the belt broke, the cam key(s) broke, or tensioner(s) (hydralic and/or manual) released tension for the crank to be able to skip teeth, or the pulley key broke along with the inner crank bolt.

One of the above had to have happened so you can turn the crank and not have the cams turn.
