What causes a turbo to go bad

What kind of blow off valve is being used? Compressor surge can quickly wear a turbo. Knock off blow off valves or blow off valves that aren't adjusted properly are prime culprits. Make sure the spring is soft enough so the BOV opens when it should but doesn't leak.

i got it from i guy i knew. he said it had low miles on it. i saw that you guys were talking about if you bring the rpms up when the car starts that can cause the turbo to go bad. well i have to redo my vacuums lines on my car or something cause my car idles really high when it is cold. it idles at 2k then drops after it warms up a bit

heat! all heat!

Actually, if you are driving the car, heat is okay. The bad thing is having a hot turbo with no oil flow. Thats why people have turbo timers or just wait for a few seconds when they are going to turn off their car. Because once the oil stops flowing and it is hot, then it clogs things up.

This is why heat shields are good. One: they keep heat away from things that are supposed to be cool (intake pipes/filter and also your radiator). And in doing so, two: contains the heat to parts that can take it (cast manifold, o2 housings, the turbo itself, etc.)

doesnt even matter until you know what turbo Needsoles is running does it?

+1 either way im assuming its water cooled too. :beatentodeath:

+1 Yup me too....O and look it was..... O and FYI ilikespeeding My 50 trim is Water cooled.....

I don't sit in my car, I just start it before I have to leave.

Why would you put anything besides a water-cooled turbo on a DSM?

ANd Again +1

Where is the turbo getting oil from?

To this guy^

The stock turbo feed line comes from the head, but its a shitty spot because it is the last stop before the oil returns to the pan, so the oil is "dirty". Plus the pressure isnt that great from the head to begin with.

Most people, including myself, get a relocation kit and cap the hole of the head. The relocation kit bolts onto the oil filter housing (you have to remove a PITA allen head screw and feed it from there). It gets clean oil with great pressure.

As far as turbo timers and all that hype, mitsu turbos as stated above are all water cooled and shouldnt need to be timed. Especially the 90's, which have very reliable air oil coolers.

Actually, more people prefer putting the oil feed on the head because of the pressure. The oil filter housing can have too much pressure for some turbos, mainly ball bearing.

Also, I have a 6152 that is only oil cooled.

that is because Your 6152 is not BB For some reson You usaly only get Water cooling if you get cool Ball Bearings:shhh: Well At least from Garrett

Also :tease: To this Guy ^ SnowBird
That is Why I asked the OP ..."Where is the Turbo Getting oil from" I've seen Turbos blow seals (NON BB) From THe VERY High Oil presure (at times) that you can get from running the feadline from the Oil sending unit that is why I put the Alen Screw BACK in.OMG Well that and I have a BB turbo now...:sneaky:

Yes alot of people, including myself have already done this, I went back to the Head to get oil though
If your the Worried about THE "dirty oil" get a Pre turbo Fliter LIke I have :thumb:

That's fine In YOUR opinion But I still am not going to Shut down my Car after a hard run if your to cheap to buy fuel and let it run for a few seconds you will IMHO still end up paying for it in the End

Yes I know this I have one I put on my 91

Next Time Direct Your Coments To someone else....:nono: I did'nt tell anyone to Use a Turbo Timer or Not I asked the OP a Question

I agree I also let my car idle after driving...heat is the enemy...I was under the ssumption the all 1ga's have oil coolers being that in the manual that came with my car it stated that it has one (91)...then again I have never noticed lines or the cooler itself:confused:

You do, Just not the Cool air to oil one that is on the 90
you got the water to oil one that is a PITA and between the oil filter and oil sending unit,I asume as long as you don't have a NA / JDM motor or something

needsoles did you work everything out? if so, let us know. im kind of worried about my idle situation and am considering just replacing all the hoses, but stupidly basing that decision all on this thread. :shhh:

Huh?....What Hoses? what's wrong with you Idle.....?

2k?? Yeah that's a tad high.

Huh?....What Hoses? what's wrong with you Idle.....?

my idle dips, not much tho. it goes from about 800 to 650 and back, shaking a lil. when you really get on the gas the car will start to misfire. im thinking it could be a boost leak as i might be getting to be a lil too modded to have a stock fuel pump in, but i just ordered ignition wires and new ngks to see if that solves it, and next ill be boost leak testing or changing that pump. my hope is that it isnt a cracked hose at this point b/c i really dont feel like changing out every damn hose. maybe i should just order the walbro anyway, the stock fuel pump is kinda wimpy.

edit: either way, im interested to know what needsoles finds as the problem.

mine does that too, but i thought it was normal to warm up the engine?

That is normal for it to do when its cool start @ 2k and slowly idle down to what ever the Idle is set At when its warmed up
