alright guys... a couple weeks ago i picked up 2 transfer cases, leather seats, awd transmission, and a complete 6BOLT for 300$!!... the guy was just wanting to get rid of it all since his wife crashed the car that they were going to put the 6 bolt in ...
now.. my question is.. what all exactly will i have to do to run a 6 bolt.. ive got a 99 gsx as posted in my profile... i am wanting to get it swapped before spring... the guy said that the motor was runnin super low 12's.. i forget what turbo he was running.. but he told my dad that i would only have to run like 8psi on the motor.. and that would be sufficient... but i just want to get all of the info together that i can.... ive been wanting to mod my gsx.. but im kinda considering leaving it stock over the winter.. and just gettin the built 6-bolt into it with big turbo ..
ANY HELP

Congrats on the pick up. What are your goals for the car? Do you have a certain power level in mind? There's a lot that needs to be done to get a "Big Turbo" to work. And 8psi getting you into low 12's, doubt it. Unless he had that engine running 8psi in a go-kart... There's plenty of write ups on doing the 6 bolt swap. There's a write up from Road Race Engineering, Magnus... Do a google search or search on here. It's been covered many many many many many... times. There's a few ways to do the swap. But you have a 99, so depending on your power goals, the 6 bolt swap might not be needed. The 98-99 Eclipses had a split thrust bearing design like the EVO's which pretty much eliminated the whole crankwalk scare people have with the 2g cars. Pretty much the only advantage a 6 bolt has over a late model 2g 4g63T engine is stronger rods. But if you only want 12's, the engine in there is strong enough to handle it. People have gone 10's on a stock 7 bolt engine. Just do a compression test and/ or a leakdown test to make sure the engine is healthy. For mods to get, there's a "TECH" section here and the tab is in the upper left hand corner of this website under the banner with the 3 cars. That should get you started on what to get. For tuning, you have the 99 flashable ECU. Just search "Ceddy" on this website and there's a couple threads with a lot of good info on what to do to datalog and tune with your factory ECU.

If your car runs perfectly fine with the motor you have now... why swap it?

If it aint broke dont fix it...

Just put it on a stand, build it if you wanna make over 400hp and save your ca$h... your gunna need it ;)

I'm sure you will need more than 8 psi to get 12's..

-----he was sayin that 8 daily is all thatd id need to run daily not to run 12's??? come on now ..

:ohdamn: My bad.

I agree if you are looking at 300-350 keep what you got now and build the motor you want.

If your car is running fine, stick with the 7 bolt for now until it blows, that way you'll have a backup just incase..

Good 7bolts can handle that power no problem

EVO 16g would be a perfect turbo for you... fast spool and easily will hit 300-350 wheel hp

If you've got the cash, the new FP HTA 16g is superb, but might be a little overboard

That's. Good point... but I don't really have to build the six bolt. It's built as it sits .. granted couldn't hurt it and would be wise since its already out .. I was torn between putting money into the 7bolt to make her quicker or put it In the six.. I can only so one right now ...

How would you be putting money into a 7 bolt that cant be used ina 6 bolt?

Cams are interchangeable

Exhaust manifold as well...

Intake manifolds are different but not necessary for your goals, a simple 2g mani will do just fine (you can even port it), then later buy a cheap 1g mani

I was not looking at it that way. But that does make sense never thought of it like that.. I've got a spare mani hanging around ..plans for porting... put from what Ive read 300hp isn't too hard to reach

If your goals are 300-350hp, leave the 7 bolt in there if it's still good. They'll handle 350hp. Buy all the other stuff like gauges, wideband, fuel pump, injectors, FMIC, turbo... You could also do the 2g head with a 6 bolt bottom end when the time comes. Then you could get an intake manifold and be set there too. There's a few SMIM's to choose from or the EVO/ RVR intake manifolds. There's a lot of money that you'll need to spend but if you buy the right parts, it should all be interchangable with the 6 bolt.

For your goal keep your motor. Crank walk is not something people should be getting their undies in a bunch just because of a 7 bolt. Can it happen, yes. Does it happen often, no.

Just because it's something you hear on this site, we do not show a majority of the 7 bolt motors that are being beaten up on the streets and surviving.

You can reach 350 fairly easy and fairly cheap depending on if you want new or used.
