Hey guys, every time I start up my car I get a weird noise going on for about 2-3 seconds. Its like a grinding clanking noise its hard too explain, not sure what it is, also it doesn't happen every startup but most times it happens, ive had a couple people tell me its the starter but I wanna double check, all opinions welcome, Its been doing it for awhile now(months) Thanks guys :thumb:

Mine does the same thing, it sounds kind of like a bird or something for a second or two. Does it about 90% of the time. It is definitely the starter. I think the solenoid sticks for a second or two or something. Mine has been doing it for a few years and hasn't caused any problems or gotten any worse.

Check the two bolts that hold your starter in place they might have backed out a little.

Ill check it out, but if it were bolts wouldn't it make the noise every time? It doesn't make the noise every startup?

It is the starter i have had that same problem on two dsm's, depending on how it has been doing this when you pull the starter make sure to look at the ring gear on the flywheel to make sure the teeth are ok.

If it only happens on cold starts, it could be the lifters priming up. Not sure if that's the sort of "clanking" you're talking about.

I just fixed a grinding starter on my car. It would only happen every once and a while, but it would stil start. Yesterday it wouldn't start and only grind. I went to take out the starter to find that one of the bolts went missing...put a new bolt in and now everything is perfect!
