My car had web cams(popular grind, can't remember the exact specs) with the web springs and retainers. Dsm link was settup for 8500 rpm's at the rev limiter.
Well one day my car was missing like hell and my mechanic just happened to find a valve not coming all the way back up. Note:I never missed a shift or overrevd my car.

The mechanic then decided to pull the head off the block. To our surprise the spring was literally broken, cracked(outside spring) whatever you wanna say.Well upon further investigation , we found another cracked spring(outside spring) on another valve. I called Web and asked them to explain what the hell was going on.
To make a long story shrt they replaced all 16 outter and inner springs and retainers with what they call an UPGRADED set which is supposed to be able to handle higher revs. Well, I'll be damned if I put these things on my car, because I have heard people mention that they have broken web valve springs on occasion.I was surprised. I refuse to have my car be a gunnea pig for these so called Upgrade springs. Maybe these are better but I dont wanna chance them and have to pay my mechanic for a cylinder head RR and the replacement of any more bent valves.'Thats right! Two bent valves and two cracked outter springs.I have 1mm valves and we have been waiting for them for two weeks now. Web gave no arguement and just replaced everything, springs and retainers that is.I;m suspicious about their setup especially since I've heard about the issue with there old camshafts. Now the springs? I've written them off. :thumbdown
Well I just wanna know what springs should I use now? Crower,Hks,Stock,Ferrea,I only want to safely rev my car up to 8000rpms with the 264/272 HKS cams I now own.

My crower is holding together good. I've overrevved couple times :D

I have Crower as well. No problems so far, although they've only been on for a year and have about 1000-2000 miles on them.

Chris

Chris at RMDSM in his GVR-4 runs over 8K on a stock 1G head with HKS 272s and 160,000 mies on the ODO and he has NO VALVE FLOAT at all.

Some one else, (Maybe Hal), revs to 8K on stock springs/retainers with crower cams that have more lift than even the 272s.

New stock valvetrain parts are pretty damn good.

I personally know people that have had great luck with Ferra, Crower, and HKS as well.

The crowers and hks are single spring setups correct? Does it make a difference dual or single? Perhaps not at 8grand rpm's?

What kind of RPMs are all you crower guys revving to? I.e. 8000, 8200, 8500, etc.
And, what kind of frequency are we talking? I.e. rarely, often, all the time, etc. ?
Just trying to see if they would work on a daily driven car that sees 8500+ RPMs most of the time....

When I rebuild may head last year I put Crower springs and stock retainers in and ran the dog snot out of my car all season(shifting at 8k pretty much every weekend) with no problems what so ever. The Crowers are a single spring (not sure about the HKS)so there is no machining required.

I'm definitely leaning towards the crower(springs and retainers). Many have said that the ferreas are one ofthe best ones out there. But you have to get the whole setup(valves, retainers, locks, seats)very expensive but very good..Ive also heard alot about the crowers being excellent as well.

I would never recommend any web products to any one. More than one person has told me that they have broken them. I remember they had a serious issue with their cam shafts. Now the damn springs! Anybody else have the same sorry experience with these springs as well? That is with all the measurements(valve stem height) correct? I forgot to mention that the retainer cracked in half as well.Web sent me a so called upgrade set but I'm not experimenting on my car. These things are for sale...They're outta here!!!! :thumbdown.
Apparently people have been complaining.More stress is being placed on the outer spring so I think they may have raised the height of the inner spring or both.and also increased the spring strength. They explained it all to my mechanic. Well I hope people get the warning. :barf: :thumbdown

Now thats what I'm talking about and wanna hear. Sounds promising And I ordered them (Crowers)from roadrace. They said the HKS272 exh cams will be in Jun 26th so I ordered mine.

I am personally going to use the SI/MANLEY springs and retainers. My machine shop is a dealer with MANLEY and he can get them to me for about $35 more than the crower kit. Just my personal preference though. :thumb:

You can't tell me those mother####ers aren't sexy as hell!

Later,
Dustin

Yes, they may be sexy as hell but i have had nothing but bad luck with them and my motor isnt even in yet!!! I have full race comp cams, SS valves and the SI/Manleys. i could barely move my cams once installed and when the belt was on, and when i was turning the crank to rotate everything, The cams/gears would not move. i run a kevlar belt with skunk cam gears and everything is built but i couldnt get them to budge and ive tried everything to diagnose that the springs are too stiff. Plus the shim they give you if gigantic. it makes it virtually impossible to move those things. now im gonna have to take my head back off, order crowers, take my herad to the shop again, have them replaced, waste MORE money and then put it back together! mayeb some people have had better luck with them but my encounters with them have been terrible. It really stinks too because i wanted to run these badly but not anymore! Just my .02 cents for you

I am running the crower stage 3 cams (bigger the 272's) on the crower springs and retainer and have dogged the crap out of my car for almost a year also. And have had no problem at all. I was reving to 8k but am thinking about rasing the limit even more now with my 60-1.
