Two samurai swords, 2 nunchakus, 1 bow staff, 6 shurikens, .45, 9mm. AK in the future?

Springfield XD .45
I just picked this up on wed. My first weapon as a civilian so I'll se what this so called "mans weapon" does, thats what the guy called it.. Anyone on here have any experience with it?

I'm currently saving myself for one of those. I've fired the 9mm version and it was beautiful to shoot. I can't wait to get my hands on the .45ACP version.

Anyone have new stuff?

I picked up a SIG 2022 9mm. Love it.

I have the xd45 4" barrel (and lots of other guns). The sights are allright, but it turns out that the factory Sig Nightsights can fit. And they're available cheap. Trijicon night sights for like 50 bucks. It can't be beat!

Just wondering what your favorite gun you have is,mines my m11

Silly mouse gun. :tease:

I use a Springfield XD .45 Tactical as a sidearm. I have a Savage 10FP in .223 that's for practice and varmint work and I have a Remington 700 SS 5R Milspec .308 that I use for long range tactical (200-1000 yards).

Pictures are uploaded in some other threads of the same topic. I'll upload a pic of the .308 when I get around to taking a picture of it.

Im going to go look at one of these tomorrow. Id like to find a nice bi-tone .40 or .45acp in the 4" service model. Appearantly new for 2008 (shown on the springfield site) is an additional safety in easy access for your thumb.

Any advice on the gun, it will be my first handgun and i really like this one's features, i was first looking at a glock, but my friend is getting one so i want something different, i came across the xd and i really like it.

Pro's / con's, caliber advice? Im going for a home protection gun/ fun gun that i'll shoot at the range with friends 2x a month.

Leet! give me advice for my first gun!

Here - check out the new safety for 08 models. (upper right hand side of page)

The only con that I can think of with the XD is the fact that when using the both thumbs forward grip style one of your thumbs will inevitably contact the slide stop/release latch, causing it to sometimes close on an empty chamber and mag.

If you're using a standard old school combat grip you will be fine. I work around it by bending the tip of my right thumb slightly down and this gives me the vise like grip required without causing any interference.

I don't see the need for the new thumb safety. Between the grip safety and the trigger safety the gun will only fire if you are holding it correctly and squeeze the trigger. The .40 SW is a nice round but I'm a .45 ACP fan at heart, when it comes to handguns I won't use anything less. Maybe .38 Super if I ever got into competition for it, but that's a different story. I've yet to fire one, but supposedly the new .45 GAP cartridges are pretty sweet.

Just don't get a 9mm. :tease:

You can't go wrong with the XD though, it's a great gun. I've had mine for about 6 months now and I've put at least 5k rounds through it. Simple to clean and operate. There is a picture of it a few posts up. I did install the Trijicon tritium sights, they are a MUST for a defense gun. Three green dots glowing brightly in the dark  If you do go with the .45 ACP model, get the tactical version with the 5" barrel (unless you will be using it for CCW) because it will offer superior external ballistics due to the increased velocity. It's somewhat a moot point at 7 yards (standard combat pistol distance) but I'm a LR shooter at heart and I freak out about these things :)

nice! thanks for the info!
Were the sights hard to install?
I would never get a 9! those feel like the .177 co2 bb gun i used to shoot shit with in high school! haha

I think i want the 45acp. If a dope fiend brakes into my house and tries to rape me i want to put his pcp ass down! haha

So its pretty safe without the new thumb safety? I want this over the glock because it seems more safe and feels better in your hand. It also has the loaded chamber indicator so you know when you have one in the hole.

Thanks again for the info, im gonna go see if they have a bi-tone one at my gun store, and if not, when they can get me one!

The sights are simple to install, you just need a brass punch to remove and install them. Zeroing them is a pain in the ass sometimes, I used about 100 rounds getting them dialed in. You just need a stable rest (a sandbag will work fine) and a target. Take your time, be consistent with your shots.

From the factory it will put 5 shots inside of 1" at 7 yards, which is fine. You can get more accuracy out of it if you need to but for defense pistol work that is more than acceptable.

I agree, Glocks are a reliable weapon as well but the grip angle has never felt comfortable in my hands. The XD points naturally and is very comfortable to aim and fire. There is also a cocked striker indicator on the back of the slide in addition to the chamber indicator.

I've shot the 9mm XD's as well, they barely move upon recoil. I'm just not a fan of the 9mm's terminal ballistics.

this is a 3 shot group from my Savage 10FP at 300 yards. It's 1 inch in diameter, which equates out to .33MOA (Minutes of Angle). A minute of angle is 1/60th of a degree of arc at any given distance. 100 yards = 1 inch 1000 yards = 10 inches. Ammunition used was Hornady Match 75gr. HPBT .223. It was fired off of a Harris Bipod. I should have used a sandbag or my pack.

I don't know what brand they are, but I do know that the factory iron sights worked fine. I doubt their night sights would be any different. I just went with Trijicons because I know for a fact that they are grunt proof.

any different then the trijicons or factory iron sights?

IT would be easier for me if i need em to have em on the gun already b/c im new to shooting pistols (do waterfowl hunting) and dont have much experience sighting in a gun.

The Trijicons are a drop in (well, punch in) fit. Sight bases are pretty much standardised for pistols, there are just different offerings for different guns/uses.

If you don't know how to do it, go with the factory night sights. :thumb:

Leet: Why don't you like 9mm's ? Is it just a PP thing?

Well as everyone knows the .45 does have more dropping power over the 9mm but, if 3 9mm chest shots doesn't stop the target then I guess I have another 14 shots for the job. :toobad:

The ballistics of the round are not preferable to me. Terminal Ballistics are lacking due to the small size of the bullet and external ballistics are of a high velocity (to compensate for the smaller mass) which creates more noise (a .45 ACP round is subsonic yet still packs a Hell of a punch).

If it takes you 17 shots to drop someone, you (or your gun) are 'doing it wrong.' My trade is LR shooting, you get one chance to hit before your position is compromised. Defensive situations are different as you're already compromised but habits are habits for me :)

Cool, thanks for clearing that up.

Im trying to figure out my "dream" configuration of the gun to see if i can get one ordered up through my gun shop. I would just order it online, but all the FFL dealers in the San Francisco Bay area have a "handshake agreement" to not import anything in. They see it as lost business for themselves. There is one in Pacifica, but they charge $100 to do it, but thats complete BS!

My "dream" model is:
4" service model
.45 acp
bi-tone
10rd mags (i guess hi-cap is illegal in cali or something?... i can always just order the hi-cap mags later haha)
08 model with the thumb safety ( but i guess i dont need that eh?)
Factory night sights

I guess its better to have my local gun shop order this up for me, as i'll be giving them direct business and if i ever need something done they will know me and where i got the gun, and if i need to cash in on my lifetime warranty then there shouldnt be a problem either. Plus, after paying $100 to get it shipped to them b/c they are the only FFL dealer in the area it'll probably even out their price to whatever price saving i was getting from buying the gun online.
