I'm beggining to think I have a n/t with a turbo on it. Are there anyways to tell for sure?

Wait you mean you don't know if your car has a turbo or not?

Pull your head off and look at the pistons. Or, check the designation of the block. I forgot where it was but it'll say 4g63T or just 4g63.

Check the engine and firewall, both should have 4G63T
Turbo pistons will have D and T stamping, Non-turbo will have just D stamping
Turbo blocks have a knock sensor
Turbo blocks have oil squirters

On the VIN number for your '91: Look for the letter "U" meaning that the factory installed the turbo for you. If you got an "R" in the VIN, it was definitely a NT (and you wouldn't have the turbo boost gauge in the tach area...duh..) - just the normal 4G63 with the standard gauge set.

If you got a "T" in that VIN, you had a 1.8 in that thing that was made up to the 4G63.

1993 the number's changed.

"B" - 4G37
"E" - 4G63 NT
"F" - 4G63 Turbo

2G's

"Y" - 420A NT
"F" - 4G63 Turbo
"G" - 4G64 Spyder 2.4L

Yeah but you can switch the gauge clusters so that wouldnt prove anything. The only reason I am asking is because it has a f5M22 tranny in it, and not many people go through the trouble of switch fly/clutch so they can use an n/t tranny on a turbo car. But I checked and it is a 4G63T

Get a high intensity flashlight and pull the plugs. If there's a T on the pistons then you have turbo pistons in your car. And even if turbo pistons were swapped in by the previous owner, there's no meaningful difference between your possible nt shortblock and a turbo shortblock.

Also you could feel around behind the block on the firewall side under the intake manifold, looking for the knock sensor. nt cars have no knock sensor.

A NT tranny... F5M33's be the turbo tranny.

"22" trannys has a 3.78/1 final ratio whereas the "33" tranny is a 4.10/1 final ratio to work best for the turbo.

Still, check your VIN on the dash and on the sticker mounted on the driver's door pillar. Should read as such: 4P3CS44RxMExxxxxx .. for the 91 Laser. See if that "R" exists in your VIN.

If thats the pic of the car in your avitar, someones been fumbling around in there doing something.... LOok at your pipes, and your intake.....

Christ I'm getting old...you can see that detail in the avatar? Looks to me like stock rubber pipes and such...

Look inside your maf and see if you have both upper and lower honeycombs. I know the non turbos have only the top square honeycomb, i checked it out before.

Well, it has an "R" in the VIN number and no U, and it says on the firewall it has an f5M22 tranny. The car does have the turbo gauge cluster though. I hope i didnt get screwed by the guy who sold it to me, i'm gonna look at the pistons today and see what is stamped on them. This could explain why he had it on stock boost. And yes that is my car in the avatar

I have a Talon TSI AWD, and the Etching on the block says 4G63, the DSM Tag on the firewall says 4G63. Non have a T.

So your saying all of them just have 4G63 with no T? Where exactly is the stamping on the block. The only thing I can find is where it says 2.0 on the side of the head. Then again it's raining and I cant see well to begin with LOL

Not saying all... but mine it does not. Its on a Flat area on the block, under the exhaust manifold, under the water pipe, on the driver side of the block.

I thought my old 94 was a real gst but it was a N/T with the fm22 trans. I found out through the vin. I did notice the plastic underneath where the lower intercooler pipe went through was cut to allow the intercooler pipe to pass through. I thought nothing of it at first since I was new to DSM's.

Lucky for me, the engine was a 6-bolt from a turbo 90 though.

Just pulled a spark plug and the pistons have 63D stamped on top so it is an N/T. Mf'er told me it was a factory turbo car and since i'm new to DSM's I didnt know any better! Is the only difference the oil squirters and the compression? If so maybe I can run a meth/ water setup with race gas at the strip and turn down the boost to stock for the street.

Yes you can do that plan. I strongly suggest it. One good thing is that with a good track tune, you will make quite a bit more power with the higher compression. DEFINATELY get a logger. You MUST keep an eye on knock.
