New to the dsm scene. Just bought a 97 GSX. From what I read, there is a internal wastegate somewhere in the car??? My question is...can i use an external wastegate since I apparantly have a stock internal one? Can I run both? Any downside to this if you can? The reason I'm asking is because I bought a header and it has an opening where I have to mount an external wastegate to it.
Also, I have read that a stock 1G BOV is better to use than the stock 2G that is currently on my car???? Any truth to this. Would it be better to get an aftermarket one because I heard some of these make the car sound mean when they "release". ??? Any insight to these questions would be greatly appreciated!!!

The internal wastegate is on the exhaust side of your turbo. You have a round wastegate actuator that has a rod on it that goes to the base of the exhaust side, this rod opens the wastegate flapper. The only way you can see it is by takeing the turbo off your car. You can weld it closed and put on an external wastegate, but usually externals are used in high hp turbos. If you are using the stock t25 turbo you may as well leave it the way it is untill you upgrade a bigger turbo. Yes the 1g bov is better than the 2g, the 2g is known to leak after 16 psi and the 1g i believe is good to 25, and if you want to upgrade it would be an inexpensive choice. Just make sure you keep it recuirculated. welcome to the world of dsm's, get to know the search button as there is alot of usefull info on this site and alot of info has detailed descriptions and pictures. In the tech guide there is upgrade paths you can follow to build your car up as far as you wish to go.

I we upgrade to the evo 3 16g turbo, do we have to upgrade the wastegate? Can I run the as it is. I cant seem to find my question anywhere.

You are fine with an internal waste gate on an e3 (evo 3 16g) i've seen it driven with 28lbs of boost and held fine, a little spike but nothing major. You do not need an external wastegate especially since you have a stock setup.

Actually, why are you even upgrading your turbo? Nothings wrong with that internal setup.

Pretty much all smaller turbos will come with an internal gate. Most people, when fighting with boost creep with 16 and 20g turbos will upgrade to an external system because its an easier way to control boost. With the added airflow that a bigger/better flowing exhaust, the exhaust gasses are passing through the hotside (exhaust side of turbo) much better which causes the stock internal gate to be over-ran.

That being said, with your current setup, there is nothing wrong with internal.

Yes, it's on the turbo.

You can block off the internal gate and use an external gate, but I don't know why you would on a stock setup with nothing to gain by switching.
The reason I'm asking is because I bought a header and it has an opening where I have to mount an external wastegate to it.
Why did you do that? Is the stock manifold cracked? If not, there's a good chance the manifold you're planning on installing will be cracked in a short period of time....so I wouldn't let that stock manifold get too far out of reach.

Your 2G BOV will become a wastegate itself at around 14psi, perhaps sooner.
Would it be better to get an aftermarket one because I heard some of these make the car sound mean when they "release". ???
If spending $200+ to make a squeal noise sounds mean to you, then go for it. Personally I'd never spend over $30 on any BOV when a 1G valve does the same function and is 100 times more reliable than any aftermarket valve you'll find.
