okay my bro just got me this 97 eclipse gst for a going away gift and i cant seem to find out what is wrong with it. It starts but sounds like either it has cam or a bad misfire here is a video so you can see how it sound at idle and when i rev it up then when i stop rev it just dies automatically!!! here is the video. Sounds like a leak in the intake pipe between the turbo and maf or possibly a bad maf sensor, or sensor not plugged in. It could also be a leak in an intercooler pipe. Is the car throwing a check engine light. I would check the plugs, make sure all 4 are firing, do a boost leak test, and check the timing marks.

are you having any leaking from under the car? The reason why Im asking is in the video i see some smoke when you rev it up. Maybe its just the angle though

yea smoke did come up but i was thinking it was the oil i spilled on the headers. :/ and time mark are one tooth apart could that really make that big of a diff :/ and no engine light but the ic is loose so maybe it is leaking from there and i just checked the exhaust and from the turbo to the exhaust it has a bit of a gap so maybe leaking from there to. Jeez hope this isent a endless fix :(

I am assuming you took the timing cover off. If not you can't tell if the timing is off or not. Unless you are just looking at the cam gears.

Post pics of the timing marks. As well as the engine bay.

Do a boost leak test, I see you have a 2g bov=leak.

ok will do in about an hour running a few aarons. i will post pics of the timing marks, engine bay and underbelly of the car i just might do another video.

Errands* It's not something some guy named Aaron had to do. ;)

Picture of the timing marks would help indeed. Also do a boost leak test, ensure your spark plugs are in good share, and that all your spark plug wires are firing.

It sounds to me like it's running on 2 cylinders.

Did this car just recently get a new/installed motor, or were things removed from it before it was sold to you? It sounds like it has lots of mods, but a stock ECU.

What engine management system does this car have? Does it have cams? It sounds like it needs some idle help. Have you gone through the bliss screw adjustment process?

My car sounded like this when I didn't have the proper injector settings on ECMlink, and before I adjusted the throttle cable, and bliss screw.

Kind of curious to your problem since I am having a similar one. Please post those pics.

its going to be one of 3 things.

1- a spark plug or plugs are bad (or spark plug wire/s)
2- your timing is off ever so slightly to cause this.
3-boost leak/maf sensor related issue.

and its NOT:
an exhaust leak problem

ok sorry bout the wait but been busy with other stuff so here is another video of the cam gears and the timimng marks sorry bout the quality. and when i push the clutch it starts sometimes and sometime just clicks??? I changed the starter but could this be happening due to the timimng is off?? :/ and will anybody know a good site or have a video on how to change the timing belt. I have been seaching and found some information on how to but it is not really detailed as i like it to be :/ here is the link to the other video i have on youtube so any input you guy know will help me out greatly!!! :) thanx!! 1. I am not sure by the video, but it looks like the lower intercooler puping is not conected to the intercooler.
2. you have an open dump tube from the o2 housing thats why it sounds like a race car and there is smoke.
3. there is no way we can tell you if timing is corrrect just by looking at the cam gears. Dowel pins go up, on your video there are facing down. Either way you need to look at the crank spoket, oil pump, and BS marks to make sure timing off/on.

4. clutch pedal problem? are the conections on the starter tight and clean?

I am going to attempt changing the timing belt so hopefully I succeed :) LOL! And yes all connection are clean and tighten, I was thinking it was cause the timing was off so it hesitate to start???? But I dunno?!?!

And thanx for you info you supplied for me that really is helpful lotz!!!! :) I will post vids or pics as my progress goes with the timing belt.

read the manual for checking the auto tensioner serviceability limits.

check for proper torque on your tensioner pulley.

Ok just found out I have a bent rod!!!!! :( DAM!!!!!! Will post pics up as soon as i get a new camera my old one ummmm lets say.......... had a swim (water park) :( but oh well i have another motor laying around somewhere out here LOL.
