What is a 2GB Front Bumper?

For the 1997 model year, the Mitsubishi Eclipse received the "2GB" (2nd Generation, version "B") styling, including an all-new front bumper cover complete with a new emblem, headlights, and fog lights.

Example of an OEM 2GB Front Bumper Installed on a Non-Turbo Eclipse.

The same bumper cover was used across all trim levels including RS, GS, GS-T, GSX, and Spyders. The only differences were that the RS featured replaceable fog light covers, while all other trim levels received replaceable bezels for use with fog lights (see "E" in the image below), and the turbo models (GS-T, GSX) did not come equipped with the right (passenger side) Air Inlet Cover (see "D" in the image below).

I believe the corner plate grommets are supposed to have screws that would fasten the plate to the bumper. But I cannot find any indication of the screws existence in the service manual or the parts catalogue.

Weirdly enough, it doesn't look like they did it that way. I checked three OEM bumpers, and as many diagrams as I could find, and never found any screws there. One of them was on a 1998 GS parts car that I'm pretty sure never had its bumper removed... but it's always possible.

The grommets do have holes in them, and it makes sense to me that they would do it that way, but instead, it just fits into a notch on the bumper cover and clips into the plate to hold it so you can bolt it in from the underside.

Unsurprisingly, I find they like to disappear. 😒😆

I went and looked at my bumper (which has 100% been removed before and it has screws holding that plate in place. I removed them for inspection, and found that the square hole in the bumper is clocked 45° from the hole in the plate on the rearward hole. So the plastic clip wouldn't have a way to go through the bumper into the plate. This could have been shenanigans from previous owners, but I found it to be curious.

The aftermarket ones arent terrible, however the fit and finish of a factory front bumper is better.

If it is even remotely possible I highly reccomend using a urethane welding technique to repair your old factory bumper

Most people will never notice the aftermarket bumper, but your average dsm'er will be able to tell right away your car has a $80 ebay bumper cover

I am restoring Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GST, can you confirm that the side Air Inlet Covers D are missing and that it is empty? Thanks
