Probably two-wheel towing by the previous owner of the trans. How bad is it to use the gear that's a little chipped up?

I would never use a gear that was a little chipped up our transmissions are so tempramental I would try and get everything fixed right the first time and save youre self alot of agony in the long run. If you have a digital cammera take some pictures of the parts you need and I will see what I can do about getting them for a decent price, and I don't want any profit, I'm just trying to help you out cause i know how much of a pain it the ass our tranmissions can be. As I mentioned before, there are 10-15 different bearing sizes for that application. You use different thickness bearings to properly shim your center diff.

You have several options. Assemble your diff using any used one and see how much play you end up with. If it is too much play, you will have to get one that is thicker, if the play is too little (you are having a hard time spinning the diff internals), you will need a thinner bearing. If you are buying a new one and have nothing to reference, just get the one in the middle and go from there. A good dealer will allow you to bring them back, as long as you do not run the car that way.

I will agree with other, do not use that shaft if it has any real cracks! Those gears are already prone to failures, you do not want to give anymore reasons to go .

On your transmission there won't be a bearing there it is only a shim plate. On shep's peice it is machined to take a bearing to give you less friction than that shim plate. If those two pieces are still good on your spare tranny than I would just swap them in. the shim you would need to measure if you wanted to get a new one. I hope that clears things up a little, because I was under the impression that it had a bearing in it stock until I pulled mine apart. Maybe I was the only confused one <<me. If you want any pictures as to what I'm referring to let me know.

After pressing the fused gear and housing apart, and cleaning the spare pieces in gasoline, I know I am going to do 1 of 2 things:

a) Buy the rebuild kit from Conicelli ($140.00) and find the right SHIM within the kit (if it comes w/a variety.) Then I'll drive the car and hope it doesn't happen again.

b) Send the whole unit to Shepard and have him install the Torrington upgrade he has. I know the service is $75, but I don't know how much he would charge me to machine the housing cover surface slightly and/or provide me w/a used gear. Is that what is meant by a $35 'core' charge, a whole new cover and gear? If so, that's a good price.

Does anyone know much he would charge for the bearing installed, useable gear and housing cover? Only $110?

Which one should I do? Anyone use his bearing upgrade yet?

Sorry about calling the shim a bearing, it was confusing. All this jargon is confusing to me, whose only slightly more knowledgeable than a newb..

I'm not sure if you can send the peice to Shepard to have it machined, cause he has it listed as an option in a complete rebuild. If you can I would suggest that route. I have not tried his bearing upgrade but I'm sure he has run it in his car and still is. But like I said before, if you have these peices in another tranny that are in decent condition I would use them.

You are actually easier to deal with than most, you actually understand what we are refering to, instead of saying "my tranny is messed up what wrong". You actually took the time to tear into it and find the problem.

That shim also happens to be a thrust bearing . Actually, it is a bearing first, and a shim second .

I am not sure why you would buy $130 (complete with spider gears) kit when you can pick-up, just outer shaft/gear for around $30 (used)...

Got all the parts I need, does anyone know how much endplay is exceptable regarding the spacer that is 15 different sizes?

Do you measure anything, or just play it by feel?

Anyone in Milwaukee an expert on this?

Have you looked in the factory manual? I believe that they go through a procedure on how to measure it.

I usually go by "feel", but that is very subjective and I could not tell you how to do it.

My problem definately applies, and maybe what I know so far can help. And maybe one of you guys will know the rest.
AWD car, and the peice inside the transmission which holds the drive axle shafts broke somehow.
I have 2 other transmission from GST's, so I used one and converted to FWD.
I removed the drive shafts, transfer case, and AWD tranny, then installed the FWD tranny.
I had to replace the upper shield that is behind the flywheel, the AWD shield isn't a match for the FWD. And the starter that was in the car already was originally from that FWD, so I used it again.
My problem with all this is that the starter won't engage. And the car runs crazy rough once push started.

the starters are the same, the FWD flywheel has a larger outside(ring gear) diameter, as far as it running wierd??? I dunno.
your gonna have to pull the trans and put an AWD flywheel in. sorry
