2G Viscous coupler cracked?

[NY 95 TSI AWD]

I have a viscous coupler in a 2g auto awd transmission and its completely split open and I have another one from my old transmission that has a big split on it but part of the case is solid. Should there be any split in the case or should it be completely sealed? I uploaded pics of both. Thanks, Keith

It should definitely not be split like that but it happens, I had the same thing in my own transmission. Here is a picture of how a good one looks, it's the only pic I had on my phone at the moment, but I can take some closer shots when I get home if you'd like.

Thanks for the quick response.I had a feeling it was supposed to be solid. The semi-split one I pulled out of the old trans I thought was normal until I pulled out the one on the replacement and saw it was completely separated and the 2 spring things in the differential tunnel. It got me thinking the seperation was not normal. Especially because there are cracks in what little bit of solid area is left. Another pic when you get a chance would be great. I uploaded a few more pics of the "semi split" one from the old trans to shown the damage. Looks like i will need a new one.

Yeah, it's junk. This is really common on cars that have been towed.

Interesting. Me and -red97rum- were wondering why this happens. Properly towing an AWD on a flatbed would prevent this though, correct?

Considering the wheels wouldn't be moving....yes

Yes, our AWD cars should only be flat bedded.
