I thought it was my wheel bearings but i jacked up each wheel and there is no noticeable freeplay(up and down+side to side)....should it be really obvious if their bad?.....is this the only way to test the bearings? what else could it be?
thanks

also ive driven on it for about 4 months and it hasent gotten louder or changed.......I put my car away for storage and put a new motor in it......before storage it did not do this....then when i took it out it started.......the vibration/humming is really loud especially on the highway

If it is a stick car it could be loose flywheel bolts. Could be out of balance tires or bent rims. This is one problem that people on the internet will be guessing at because of all the things that could be wrong. You just have to check everything that has to do with the drivetrain.

sometimes the bearing won't have play and it could still be bad. how old/ worn are your tires?

This is true. If that is the case they will only make noise though. To test that just jack up a tire off the ground and put the car in neutral so the tire can spin. Put one hand on the coil spring and spin the tire. If the bearing is making noise you will feel it in the spring. Don't do this on an awd car though. For an awd take it to a shop where they can put it on a lift and they can put the car in gear while the car is on the lift so the tires spin.

the vibration is just all over(more towards the back it seems) but not really in the steering wheel........ when i turn hard to the right it goes away completly.....also I have put new rims and tires on it
thanks

yeah i have a similar problem. When I'm driving straight the car is rediculously loud and there is a lot of humming and vibrations coming from what sounds like the front right tire. when i turn to the right the sound goes away, but not when i turn left. would this be my wheel bearing? or should i get that tire balance/alligned? how would i check if it is my wheel bearing or another problem. any advice would help. thanks

I would check, and possibly replace all fluids in all the boxes (transfer case, trans, and diff) and check the carrier bearing as well. There is the possibility that fluid has leaked out, or broken down causing the issue. The carrier bearing failure could be present, due to the fact that the rubber can crack and allow the driveshaft to give a nice massage while driving...:D

Don't know if this is your case, but in my case I was getting a lot of vibration and humming especially under braking due to a CV shaft. The boot was ripped, check for that.

This could be your tire or your left front wheel bearing. Swap the front tires and see if the noise goes away. If it does it is because the tires inner or outter edge is "feathered" from the alignment being off or loose fron end part. In which case the loose fron end parts make your alignment go out.
