hey guys, i know others have grinded down their Vband on their Holset turbos that have them but im curious if anyone has kept it and has welded a Vband with a 90* to the intercooler pipe instead of using a coupler. Or is there a vendor that has made something like this? my coupler is working fine, but for the sake of a way clean look and easy removal i am curious and interested in this. Since i have got a miller 180 Tig i might be the first to try this on a dsm? If i'm not, id appreciate sources for 3" inch intercooler pipe in aluminum and preferably with a 90* bend at the end and the weld on Vband flange also. I believe my holset has a 3" band outlet OD.

If i end up fabbing this up, i will post pictures here.

Edit: looks like i found a source for materials. still curious if anyone has done this. Aluminum Pipes

I was just about to recommend them. They are the same company that has the siliconeintakes.com. I've ordered from the 3 times and I've never had a problem. The stainless steel v-bands and clamps I bought from them look pretty good and the piping isn't half bad. Good silicone couplers and SS t-bolt clamps, too.

Also it will quickly add up to alot of money as the flange sets you linked to are missing the actual clamp. so figure between 40-60 bucks per joint that you vband.

Other than looks and the fact that they are less likely to leak vbands can actually cause issues like welds to crack if there is no flexing joints in the piping if your motor isnt rock steady in the mounts.

Also there is no wiggle room with vbands as they have to mate flush to seal properly. using couplers allows for slop in the set up.

Personally unless your building a stupid high hp or running like 75 psi i think its just a large money investment that you could better utilize elsewhere.

I am running a holset 40 and even with a j pipe off the turbo you are going to run into the issue of the motor mount and front subframe interference with a hard pipe as the 90 degree silicone coupler can make a shorter sharper bend since you dont have to worry about bend radius

A local tractor pull guy uses v-bands on all connections of his charge piping....but as mentioned above the turbo is attached to the engine, so you'll need a bit of flex between the turbo and intercooler or the piping will crack.

This would be an awesome setup on any piping that is rigid and doesn't move, like the elbow at the turbo and just before the throttle body.

The only plan was to do an elbow to the turbo:thumb: The rest of my fmic are all couplers, VRSF FMIC. i just wanted to get rid of my 90* silicone coupler and use the Vband that holset designed. I am in no way trying for a 100% Vband FMIC. Like i said my current coupler is working just fine with no leaks, and i have no plans to grind down my Vband on the turbo outlet. This is just an alternative option.

I've thought about buying a 90* L pipe and welding a Vband flange to either side and then welding a flange to my current straight IC piping, with two Vbands there it might allow a little more flex? or were you only talking about flex cracking piping if it was ALL solid, cause if thats what you are talking about i agree, and that was not my intentions.

That picture with the purple Vband clamp is exactly what im going for, only with the traditional DSM outlet angle.

The way i see it if i Vband to the Lower IC pipe from the turbo outlet. and leave a coupler from the lower IC pipe to the core. i think there will be no stress on the pipes. again, this is the only spot i am considering V band BECAUSE that's the only Vband i have on the car, aside of my wastegate.

i have no clearance issues with my roll stop or subframe with this turbo and my DNP manifold. if so, it would be no more then trimming the roll stop. ive noticed alot of people saying that their oil drain gets in the way of the roll stop, but my outlet is actually to the driver side of it. oh by the way i have Polly mounts, and im shooting for a final goal of 9.9 at the 1/4 which i know i wont hit on the BEP housing.

Currently my FMIC has only 4 couplers, adding the Vband to the turbo to Lower ic pipe will give me a total of 3 couplers. Thats all im lookin for. its not about trying to fix a leak, as ive said my current 2.5 to 3inch reducer coupler seals just fine, it just doesn't look as good/clean as a Vband would right there and since holset intended it to be there, why not do somethin' different that other dsmers aren't.
