Using non-turbo pistons in a TSI? Passable, Bad, or Very Bad?

Ok, I know this probably sounds ridiculous, and in reality probably is, but I'm going to ask it anyway in the hopes I get an informative reply instead of just being called an idiot. Here it goes..


So I just got my block back from the machine shop where it was bored over (from .5mm over to .75). I was initially going to buy some NPR pistons, but decided to just let the shop order some aftermarkets, and have them swap over the connecting rods. I know I sound like a horrible person for having no idea what brand they bought (there looks to be a logo on the inside of the piston skirt that is a sort of S inside a circle), but that's the sad reality. As far as I know, the old pistons were from a 2G turbo - the stampings on them were 63DT-F1 - whereas the current ones just say 63D. So from what I've gathered on my own, these are 1G NT pistons (or did 2G NT also have this stamping?), and therefore 9:1 CR. Since I was planning on having 2G T pistons anyways, is an additional .5 in CR a huge deal? My intention is to have a mostly stock daily driver, but maybe push it up to 250hp some time down the road. This project has already been one hassle after another, and I just want to put the damn thing back together already, but of course, I also don't want to have to go through all this crap again in a couple months. So what I want to know is, is using NT pistons a bad idea, or should it be safe with the stock tune, and maybe reduced boost? What about down the road if I want to get ~250hp? I don't really want to have to go back to the machine shop, but if using these pistons is just asking for trouble, then I certainly will.

Yes. that's what I'm saying. Since all 7 bolt rods are the same then yes, it's 22mm. They're the exact same part number.

6 bolt rods are 6 bolt rods whether it's turbo or not. 7 bolt rods are the same whether 1g or 2g. Obviously there was no 2g 4g63 NT so NT 7 bolts are limited to years 93-94. Spyder may count but it isn't a point of this discussion.

Mostly true, but I wanted to correct this logic. In 99 you could get a 4g63 NA Eclipse as kind of a good bye to the motor. However they are rare, in all honesty it's one of my most desired DSMs.

Apparently I looked over the part on my receipt that specified that the pistons are NPR, which is the brand I would have bought on my own. I'm gonna go back, but I'll make sure to tell them to order 93-94 turbo pistons specifically this time.

RE piston rings - is it safe to assume that they're different between 93-94 turbo pistons, and 93+ non-turbo? I tried searching around, but I couldn't find a consensus.

Yes you need turbo piston rings also.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that all EDM non turbo 2g's came with a NA 4g63.

There were no non turbo 4g63 2g's sold on the us. In Europe there were no 420a cars.
