My 1G GSX is finally fully rebuilt, maintained, and 100% healthy as a mostly stock daily driver and I'm ready to start thinking about the next level. (I think) I have 8.5:1 compression ratio thanks to the JE pistons, Eagle rods, and ARP everything studs I found in the junkyard
, MLS head gasket, have ported my 2G Ex manifold and O2 housing, and replaced the wrecked 14b turbo with a cheap big 16G from Ebay (who cares if it's crap, it works fine, I'm not a racer, and it's cheap to blow up). Have not yet invested in a bigger exhaust but will soon.
I'm interested in staying within the stock fuel system/tuning for now- I will do the fuel pump rewire for cheap extra pressure now, get a boost gauge, and use a MBC to start dialing up the boost staying within the generally accepted 15psi limit for these stock injectors. Being in Colorado, sucky 91 Octane is about the best premium fuel I can get short of race fuel, which I'm not going to buy race fuel for daily driving. With the higher compression ratio, I'm worried about detonation at higher boost levels.
At some point I want to invest in a wide band fuel ratio and EGT monitor, but until then I'm being conservative and staying out of trouble by design. The boost control solenoid functionality seems to offer something useful here- I'm thinking about inverting this signal with a relay to drive a detonation indicator light, or possibly finding and replacing the "open when energized" BCS with a "closed when energized" solenoid from the junk yard to bypass the MBC and drop the boost automatically when detonation is detected. I'm curious if the ECU starts retarding the timing before or after turning off the BCS, and if you guys have considered doing something like this. I know everyone seems to just chuck the BCS when they install an MBC, but until I feel out this new space and have a wideband it just seems foolish.
As a side note, I notice that with this restrictive, flow limited stock exhaust and no MBC that the big 16G does not start to spool/pull until about 3500 rpm- I'm hoping with a 2.5" exhaust (I'm staying under 300hp) and the MBC that it will spool sooner- anybody have a feel for how much sooner? Maybe at 3k? I think that's where the 14b used to spool, but it was worn out and grinding so I don't know what it was when it was in good condition. Thanks for your time!
