I am new here and heard this was the place to be. I just bought my first dsm and looking to do a few upgrades but not sure if I am going in the right direction.
I am rebuilding the motor with hsk cams 272, pistons standard bore but upping the compression from 8:5 to 9:1, I will upgrade my fuel pump and also 650 injectors. Have 65mm throttle body I beleive it is so will be porting the intake as well...

I guess my question is this. Will I have any major problems switching out the cams to the 272's without having to have work done on the heads other than replacing springs with better springs??

The turbo I am looking at is either a T70 or 40TE not sure yet. My goal is going to be 450 to 500 hp tops so it will still remain a road worthy car. Im looking at pushing about 25-30 psi at the end of the total set up.

What do you guys think? Am I on the right track with the upgrades I am looking at so far and what turbo would you suggest. I know they both will provide close to 500 each so I have read but not sure of personal opinions from those that have had both. I am also going to be running external wastegatejust fyi.

Oh yeah, does anyone know where I might find a desent priced ECU that is programable with ECMLink. I looked at the one in my car and it does not have the chip that pops out to be replaced with the one in the kit. I have a 98 GST by the way.

sounds like you're on the right track. The cam swap is pretty easy, and springs are all you need to worry about as long as the head is in good shape. If you are doing the work yourself I would have a shop take a look at the head.

With ## being a 98 You can flash ## ECU without having to chip it. http://ceddy.us/ there are all about the H8 Ecus. Check them out and see if ## ECU is one of the flash-able ECU's

Yeap.
You are on the right track.
and concerning to the Eprom ECU.
You have to Socket the ECU to be able to switch from a factory chip to ECMLink chip, You can buy the Socket and sold it to the ECU if you know how to do soldering, other wise just send the ECU and get it to socket.

You talking about soldering the socket?? If so yeah I could do that.. Im pretty good with that kind of stuff.... Just new to the ECMLink thing.. Will have to look into that much more the closer it gets... I know the oem chip has the info to run so not sure if you copy something then program or what i know i read something about that but think it was with flash or something... tahts the next project to look into..LOL

Ill look into this as well.. thank you man..

500 hp is going to require much larger injectors then 650's, even on pump gas. Here is a simple chart but check out this thread for more info: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/393264-x-hp-fuel-injectors.html. And if you are considering e85 you need 33% bigger injectors then listed.

HP Goal – Min Injector Size (cc/min)*
250hp-....... 550cc
300hp-....... 650cc
350hp-....... 750cc
400hp-....... 850cc
450hp-....... 950cc
500hp-....... 1050cc

Also check out the upgrade paths if you haven't already, you are missing a few pieces to the puzzle to reach 500hp. Tech Guide: 1G 4G63t Upgrades - DSMtuners.

Regarding the Cams, make sure you use a quality spring set (I like Manley) with titanium retainers or even better a set of Kiggly Beehives :thumb:

Keep reading up on ECMTuning. It is a wonderful program!

Also I see you are in Las Cruces, Welcome! Check out our El Paso Area local forum: El Paso Area DSM Forum - DSM Forums.

Hope this helps!

As the 98 ECU can not be converted for link... Could I replace the ECU with a 97 ECU without a tuning of the ECU at first?? A even swap would work and run fine correct or am I totally mistaken?

Check at ECMLink.
They can convert your Non Eprom ECU to EProm.
So, it means that you don't need an Eprom to run ECMLink.
Here is the page so you can read it and have more knowledge a bout it.

You can reflash your ecu or even swap it out for a evo 8 ecu and use evo_scan. Some repinning is required.

So your saying...
