2G Unusual transmission oil leak from transfer case?

Hey guys so today I decided to pull my 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (auto transmission) out of the garage and noticed a little oil leak on the cardboard I had placed under it just in case. Just a little leak you know?


So I jack up the car and that leak GOES BIG. I mean starts pouring full on (might be apparent from the posted pics). And I was confused and shocked.

It’s strawberry colored so I think it’s transmission oil. I can also confirm this because I checked my transmission oils before and after and after, they were nonexistent.

sooooo. Busted coolant line? Maybe the transfer case leak? Maybe something with front differential? I personally don’t think it’s a seal since a seal wouldn’t leak that much right?

anyone have some ideas? Tomorrow I plan to jack the car back up and remove the transfer case.


P.S: this is my first car and the first time I’ve worked on a car. I love DSM (love at first sight) and I’m committed to fixing it myself. Thanks guys

Ohhhh my god. Dude, you just saved me a huge headache. I drove this car 300 miles from cali to arizona and only noticed the transmission oil leak when i got back, that one bolt wasnt even there when I got back man. Thats why the entire axel was loose. Ill look to where I can buy this AC compressor bracket. Youre really a godsend man.

You don’t need the bracket if you’re not planning to put ac back in. Just need a stack of washers. If someone has a bracket laying around, they can measure the thickness. I used 3 thick ones on my 1g. I’d replace that axle seal btw.

Start with 3 x 2mm washers and bolt the drivers side down bolt and check to see if the bracket is flush with the block. Then go from there to see if you need one that’s thinner.

Yes, address the missing bracket and possibly broken bolt issue, of course, but also replace the driver's side output seal on the trans. The loose CV axle (not axel, that's a guy's name), tore into and ruined it, thus the leak. It's a $10-$15 part (get OEM from a dealer or online to be safe) part and easy to replace. Also check the axle to make sure it's still ok, no weird noises when flexing it, etc.
