I've seen several accounts on here of guys saying they had engine damage from a failed pulley. I don't remember specifics, and if weren't such a lazy ass I'd search and post the links.

If you drive it with the hideous noise emanating from the pulley for three weeks while waiting for an answer you like to be posted on DSMtuners (instead of the ugly truth), the loose part can wander over against the timing belt dust cover, cut out a large enough chunk for the cam belt to grab, feed in between the belt and the crank sprocket, and voy-la!
