I got a set of never-used SS pulleys. It has: crank, PS, alt, and water pump. I got them for free, but I don't know anything about their gains on a DSM. I'm only lookingto make 350whp with a 16g. Are these needed, or should I sell them? Slowboy has 'em for $419. Hmm...

They do work well, I had a set on my car for the past 4 years..keep them

you got any dyno numbers? I think it's just a ricer mod that doesn't ad any power. I think you should sell them to me and buy yourself something that will give you power instead ... I'll give you $50 ;) ( please? )

Keep in mind that the stock crank pulley is something you probably should not replace. It has a harmonic balancer which helps balance the entire moving mass of the crank, flywheel, etc. while protecting it from vibrations caused by the combustion explosions of the motor. Underdrive pulleys on the other hand are expensive and solid metal, providing absolutely no vibration reductions. I believe either Magnus or Buscher makes a harmonically balanced underdrive pulley, but it is VERY expensive (at least $350). That and it makes your accessories spin slower...people want to make 5 more hp and have crappier alternator output, etc.?

I'm too lazy to search ... why would not having a harmonic balancer be so bad?

yes, it makes your accessories spin slower, that is exactly why it allows you to put more power at the wheels. they turn things like the alternator slower, true, but your alternator hits max output well below 2000 engine rpm anyway. how often is the car operated below 2000 rpm? same with your power steering, AC, and others, they only suffer at very low rpm.

i read a very wise quote once that said RPM stands for "Ruins Peoples Motors" and the same can be said for your accessories, since they are spinning slower they theoretically should have a longer service life.

case in point, the underdrive set works for good reason and (disregarding engine internals) will do nothing but help your car perform better and go all the way down the list to getting better gas mileage.

Well I can already tell that this is going to turn into yet another "don't get a one-piece pulley or you'll destroy your engine" thread, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. I've been using a one-piece underdrive pulley for about two years now; not because of that elusive 4-5 HP gain, but because now I don't have to worry about the two-piece stocker separating and flying all over the engine bay. I may yet someday experience the "mysterious bearing wear" that allegedly is caused by non-dampened crank pulleys, but I'll take my chances of that versus the more likely event of a stock pulley coming apart.

Thanks for the imput! I'm still unsure about using them. I've heard good... I've heard bad. If I did use them, I'd probably leave the crank pulley on and use the other three. I dunno. They're $419 on Slowboy. So if any of you guys are interested, drop me a PM and we can talk. Oh yeah... LOL! The reason they were free is because a friend of mine orderd a set for his 420A, and they sent him one's for a 4g63. He sold his car and he's moving to Florida soon. I guess he was cleaning out his gargage and decided to give them to me. I think he tried to sell them on Ebay, but no one bid on them. He knows I'm building a new motor, so he was just trying to be nice, I guess. Hey, what are friends for, ya know? :D See ya,
Reggie. :dsm:
