Underdrive pulleys [ merged 1/6/07]

Okay, I went to my local import shop and I asked about an Underdrive pulley to see if they could install it for me and they reacted incredibly negatively. They said that the harmonic dampaner would be taken out and the underdrive puley would basically act like a tuning fork on your teeth making engine parts fail faster. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem or what their point of view is?

I've had mine on for the past couple of years without a lick of problems. I know of plenty of others with them also. I think the guy may have been referring to a turbo engine.

dunno the price on the obx one, but the afx udp is only $140. i have mine sitting in my room right now cause my damn stock pulley wouldnt come off  but ill let you know how the gains are

LOL when my mechanic was putting a cam gears in it took him like a hour and a half to get it off without breaking it or my engine. I've noticed that with DSMs in general, what ever material the factory uses to bolt everything down freezes up really bad after a few years. :thumb: :dsm: :talon: :laser:

ya dude its one of the few things that i was taking to a shop to do, just didnt feel like doing this one, everything else i am though, but anyways the guy tries everything, torching it, hammering away on it, and finally after about an hour he comes up and tells me he cant do it and i need to go somewhere else  he was gonna charge me $65. other quotes i got, another performance shop wouldnt do it, another said $150, and the dealer.... $450!!! :barf: :barf: :barf: so im on my own, my dads mechanic from work is gonna help me, one of these days... hopefully next week

ya i was told the same thing by one shop. but only one shop out of the 4 i went to. he said the same thing.

well, from what have read, is that us N/ts dont have to worry about it because our cranks are already internally balanced, where as the turbos aren't. what that means, i really dont know.. but i know we dont have to worry about it. btw, i just got my af/x udp the other day.. i cant wait to install it.

Ya dude my hopes got so high when i got it in the mail. went down the next day to get it installed cause i didnt feel like doing it myself. well the shop couldnt get the stock one off, so its been sitting in my room every since. but i should be installing it next week. i hope you can get your stock one off

by the way, whats up with these new smileys? i definatly like the old ones better

yea i ordered my pulley n howell said i should get it on wednesday, cant wait :thumb: oh im getting a afc on monday too hehehe

Ok im just going by what i read on other threads on here, and i know the unorthadox is really expensive, but i thought i read that the OBX one was too, and that there is little to no difference in performance between the OBX and the AF/X. thats why i got the AF/X one. it was only $150 shipped, and everyone on here says its one of the best mods to do to our cars. they say they see sweet gains. ill let you know how i like it by the end of the week i should have it on by then

if its legit than go for it then. i dont really trust ebay so i never buy stuff off of it, i always buy it new. just make sure its the right one for your car.

ok so i know this has been discussed to death, however... i can't determine from the other billion or so threads what i want to know.

Ok my crank pulley just came apart today(yay!!!) scared the shit outa me till i figure out it's an ez fix.

ok so i was thinking of going with aftermarket leightweight underdrive pulley, however. My car has 170k miles and i don't plan to keep that engine too much longer(year, year-½ tops) i plan to replace it with a 1g motor(plan) so to my question so would an aftermarket pulley w/o dampening hurt me much within a year or two or not? my motor is strong still, so i dunno... and wouldn't a bigger pulley cause all my other accessories to be outa wack? like i already have my alt not giving me a great amount of power at idle. are there lightweight pulleys that are the same size? or wat?

i have heard alot of good things about the pullys and not much negative. i would get them my self but i have a little problem of no money right now.

I found an underdrive pulley on ebaymotors, and it says it is for a 95+ turbo. Isn't this the same as the rest of the years if its a 4g63. i saw a pic of it, and it looks identical to a 1g underdrive. on Extreme Motorsport's website, the pulleys arent different. I am just wondering if someone could verify that the underdrive(non harmonic balancer) pulleys will bolt onto my 93 tsi.

They both bolt up the same, the only thing i think thats different is the belt grooves for the alt. and a/c.

but, id have to take a look at the engine in the garage to be sure.
