did someone call???

there not to bad of an install if you have the right equipment. i had a lift. i dunno how i would have done it without it. the "best" is a matter of opinion. the unorthadox is alot more expensive then the af/x with similar results. i got the af/x. you can get it here http://www.howellautomotive.com/How...duct_info.php?cPath=142_38_84&products_id=298 . its fairly cheap. 2gnt says you can get 5-8 whp from it, but a more sober estimate is probably 3-5whp. they give you more horsepower to the wheels by underdriving (thus the name) the accessories and redirecting that wasted engine power to the wheels.

heres my install guide for it.http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123165

have fun! :thumb:

oh yeah, tighten the belts after they have broken in a bit or you get a horrible squeek, my belts are getting changed as we speak...(yes i can put the pulley on but im too lazy to change the belts :p )

thanks man.......do you think that the underdrive pulley is worth the money??? what else could i do to my engine without spending alot of money..........besides nitrous?? :dsm:

nitrous isnt as bad as everyone thinks ya know. but, besides a CAI i think the UDP is the best bang for your buck. maybe a header and down pipe(flex pipe mike :p ) to complete your exaust system first? but after i got my CAI and exaust i got the UDP

to clarify a little more; underdrive pulleys are smaller in diameter and also weigh less. Because the pulleys are smaller and lighter it requires less work of the motor to turn them, thus 'adding' hp. The hp you are adding the motor already had, but the stock pulleys were absorbing that little bit of work the motor was doing. These pulleys let the power go to were its meant to go, the wheels.

yes flex pipe chris  hehe

The udp is, imho, the best bang for the buck (nitrous not being on that same list) n/a mod that can be done. I paid $150 for mine shipped to my door (howell's beauty af/x udp), installed it that weekend (BISH to install) but hell did it rev up and down alot faster definetly a worthwile mod

EDIT: Like tho post above me said, the udp dosen't "make" hp, it "frees" it up

AFX. Revs a TON faster and has dyno'd 10whp on some guys car if i remember right. Get it. I definately felt a difference when i got mine.

Thanks ECLIPSE0508 for asking the question I was about to.

Thanks GSGoinFast for the info on how to and where to buy (Howell has a lot of good stuff for my GS).

And thanks to the rest for making me believe this is a worthwhile mod.

no prob, that place is great, alot of stuff for us. they have great customer service too. some stuff is kinda expensive but other is really cheap.

hope you don't live where i live spending 90% of your time at redlights and in traffic. otherwise a great accesory to have with a complete underdrive pulley set is a few extra batteries and a jumper pack.

eclipse0508 said:
why do you say that about the red lights and batteries???? :dsm:

he's saying that if your at a red light your underdrive pulley wont drive your alternator fast enough at idle and your battery will die. this doesnt actually happen tho. never heard it happen on a 2gnt, just maybe you lights dimming a little bit.

you guys convinced me to go out and buy one....lookin on ebay rite now.... are obx udp pretty good???

Whats a more important mod before turboing? A UDP or new camshafts?
if your going for a turbo kit, they will work just fine on stock cams, sure you could get a little more hp from new cams.... but how much bang for the buck is what you have to ask yourself, you could spend lets say for example you pay 500 bucks for new cams, and get xx amount of hp or you can take that same 500 bucks spend 130 that includes shipping right now for an afx underdrive pully at howell automotive wich they say will give you (roughf estiment) probable somwhere around 8hp give or take depending on the condition of your motro and your supporting mods... that leaves you with roughfly 260 bucks, you can check me on that its been awhile since i had my last math class,.. but anyway what im trying to say is, what other mod out there are you going to spend 130 bucks on and get 8hp from.... i can give you a hint its not cams :thumb:
take this in... think aobut it for a while then in the end do what you want to.... because nobody can really tell you whats best for your car thats up to you :talon:

500 - 130= $370... how embarrasing ;)

I'm reading this thread and was reminded about an article my friend showed me in an issue of IT (I'm trying to find it now online). They have a project normally aspirated eclipse. (found it). They didn't install an UDP (idiots) and went straight for the bottle. They were able to add a 50 shot and jump to 160+ hp (about 40 hp). For 500 bucks, that isn't bad. That was after doing an AEM CAI, A'Pexi World Sport Exhaust (cat-back), and GReddy's header in round one (Feb 04). Two months later they did a tune-up, added AEM lightweight adjustable cams, tuned that and added the N20. If your going the N/A way, I think N20 is the way to go...

The problem is that even at 165 hp you are still in reach of N/A B16's and you'll have to refill in order to get that rush...

If you are planning on eventually going the turbo route, then a UDP is a good investment as it won't be a waste. In my opinion (yes it's just an opinion), the header money, as well as intake could go toward a turbo kit since those components would be replaced by the kit thus eliminating uneeded costs in the first place.

I think that a lot of the turbo guys could learn from the N/A guys in that they often get so lost in the search for more boost that they forget the basic modifications that make the ENGINE more effecient.

Not to steal the thread, but since you N/A guys do this mod more, does the UDP affect the steering feel? I would think that with the power steering pump rotating more slowly it would give more feedback to the driver.
