Under Carpet Sound Deadener Removal: The Easy Way!

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

After thoroughly searching the site I couldn't come across any people trying this method of removing the tar sound deadening, but this is by far the fastest method. I already had the drivers side floor pan done previously, but in total, the rest of the car took only 10 minutes to remove all of the material. And the best part of all, it required absolutely no effort! The reason I did this was because prior to purchasing my car is sat in the woods for 6 years with a window partially open, allowing water in and mold and mildew to flourish. Mold and mildew took hold to the porous tar and the smell was locked in to the porous surface. This is also a great mod for someone looking to shave some pounds as my bag weighed at least 15 pounds all said and done.

The tools required to remove the sound deadener are:
Air Compressor
Air Hammer
Chisel for air hammer (End needs to be slightly rounded off, a bench grinder or angle grinder will take care of this, a sharp edge is no good)
Trash Cans
Shop Vac

First start by removing all your interior to expose the tar sound deadener. After that it's time to get to work. I worked in small blocks and then cleaned up the carnage with the trash cans and shop vac, as you'll have material flying everywhere. The key here is to let the weight of the Air Hammer do the work, sort of like the jack hammer. It did absolutely no damage to the floor or anything else during the whole process. I did take a video of it, but somehow my phone deleted it. :( If anyone local is willing to donate their car I would be willing to do this to their car provided they remove their interior prior.

On to the pictures.

Work the air hammer in this fashion, allowing the weight of the hammer to do the work. It will jump around a bit, but do your best to keep it under control.

Air hammer - My cheapo HF hammer actually works better than my $70 Devilbiss hammer, imagine that.

Here's what I did to the chisel to make it work correctly.

I'm also coating everything in rubberized undercoating that previously had tar undercoating to keep the noise down a bit.
