well, i just got the timing belt back on and set the tension right. now, i am looking at vfaq and haynes manual as my guide through the whole process. anyway, i did turn the crankshaft 6 full turns according to haynes manual. there was a part where it said that do not continue turning the crankshaft if there is a resistant while turning(due to the fact that the valves are hitting the pistons), but what i want to know is.... how do i recognize the "resistance" , i turned the crankshaft with use of little force, just like when i started this job to set it so TDC, but there are times while turning that the crankshaft can be moved with less force. i'm very confused, can someone verify this for me? i would really appreciate any input. thanks....

Sparks plugs removed? Alot easier with them out. I dont know exactly why it is easier at times but its normal. If youre worried about hitting the valves, you will notice it if it does happen. Basically itll stop turning.

Ok this is whats happening. I just did teh same on my car so I know what im talking about. When you turn the crankshaft sprocket with a wrench it will feel like there is little or no resistance for about 270 degree's of the turn, but at the last 90 degree's it will be hard to turn. The reason why this is; is because on the last 90 degree's the valves springs are being compressed and that takes quit at bit of torqe. So it is perfectly normal. The reason why it is easier to turn the crankshaft without spark plugs is becasue it will allow no compression in the cylinders because it is allowing it to leave out of the spark plug holes. Also I think the 6 turns is for the oil pump, but im not to sure about that. So everything is normal and just make sure your marks on your camshaft sprockets are paralell. Good luck.

Kyle,

Awesome guys,.. thanks alot. weeaww! i thought i'm in deep trouble. i had my fingers cross before i checked this thread because i went ahead and put everything back on. so i guess everything went fine.

91OrangeGsT, yeah, what you said does make a whole lot of sense,... that exactly what happened while i was turning the crankshaft. thanks for educating me.. :thumb:
