What is the major disadvantage to turboing an automatic

There is none. I say do the turbo kit first.

Most people will tell you that A/T trannies are useless, but I think there are no major disadvantages unless you're doing hardcore AutoX. In straight lines (i.e. drag racing), A/Ts shift very quickly and smoothly, meaning you get the most out of your engine's power.

With that said, definitely go with the turbo kit first; you'll be able to notice some very appreciable performance gains right away. Save the M/T swap for later.

+1 ...definitely do the turbo first, there are plenty of guys that actually enjoy their autos :thumb:

I am looking to some day do autocross.. should I even begin to think about doing it with an automatic?

It'll be more difficult without the control an M/T offers you over your gear selection, but there's no one stopping you from trying it. I just wouldn't expect to win much with an A/T. Then again, I wouldn't expect an 2.0L N/T car to win much either... hence my reasoning to go turbo first.

dang u beat me paul...take from us bro, go turbo first :rocks:

Cool.. that's honestly what I really wanted to do first anyways. I just wanted to check if there'd be problems.

So for parts, what all besides the obvious manifold, turbo, and FMIC (plus piping) are needed?

I'm mostly looking for the $1000-1200 range, and from previous threads, I know it's possible to do so.. but how good of quality are these setups?

It honestly depends on how good of a fabricator you are...cutting, welding, blah blah etc
