I just installed the turbo xs rfl bov in my car. I'm venting it since I have the MAFT blowthrough setup. My question is this. The sound is like a loud fluttering sound. I thought this bov sounded more like a 'cracking' of a whip?? I've listened to sound clips before. What may be wrong?

Sorry for sounding like a newb, but shims as in washers? If so, I opened it up and there is one. I just got this bov today so I haven't really "tuned" with it yet so to speak.

I'm assuming the washers need to be the same size?? If so, I have to go to Lowe's and buy some!

The bov should have come with a pack of 6 shims unless you bought it used. If so and they are local, call and see if they have the shims. If not, go to lowes or whatever and get several washers. Thickness isnt a real concern, try to get with the same outer diameter and same inner if possible.

I ment you can add 2 washers if needed to make it ass thick as the stock shim. The more washers you add, the more preload you give the spring which = higher seat pressure for the piston. Do a search and it will show the proper way to adjust a bov.

The washers it comes with are just ordinary washers you can find anywhere. You could even use a couple quarters if you dont feel like buying washers.

If I remember correctly, you cant use a solid disk(quarter) of anykind because there is a boss inside the cap to center the spring. The inner diameter of the washer has to be big enough to fit over that step. If not, you might increase pressure too much causing copressor surge and we all knot that isnt a good thing.

So I just bought some washers which are the same outer diameter as the washer that was in the RFL. However, the inner diameter is much smaller. About the size of a 7/32" drill bit. I don't see how the inner diameter affect anything  I don't see anything that needs any sort of "centering"...

I always saw on the forums that you almost HAVE to "oil up" turbo xs BOV's before the first time and once in a while after that because they often stick and flutter like that. most say just use a little bit of lithium grease or something to the effect. This was usually in threads regarding the h-34 but there so similar it should apply. Just search for h-34 and something should pop up.

Here's a thread regarding the number of shims,, for the h-34 though

Oil doesn't really work, because it's too thin.
You should use grease. I used white lithium grease on my Type-H BOV, and it worked wonder.

It helps achieve better vacuum sealing ( so the vacuum signal opens the BOV easier, which means less flutter ). Also, it prevents it from sticking.

I have 6 shims in the bov right now. Under any boosting conditions like 10psi or so, I get a loud cracklike whip sound. Under normal non-boosting conditions, I either get a faint, faint flutter like sound or compresser surge. Should I try one less shim and add some lithium grease to the inside of the bov....??

You may want to pressure test your intake with that BOV. On all the cars I have seen it used, it leaked like crazy. Unles you have a very big turbo that you're not using a lot of the flow capabilities of, you don't want boost leaks.

Yes, definitely try the lithium grease. For me, it cures my flutter/compressor surge, as well as it helps with sealing.
If you have a mitty vac, you can definitely tells the difference with or without grease. Mine did not hold vacuum at all before I grease it up. Now it holds vacuum just fine.

This is how I adjusted mine:
With your current number of shims, runs your car at idle and wait after it is warmup ( so you get the proper amount of vacuum ).
Check whether or not your BOV is open. The idea is to have the smallest amount of shims so that the BOV is closed at idle. Otherwise you will be sucking in unfiltered air at idle.

If you adjusted it this way, you should have the least possible amount of flutter. Any less shims, then you run the risk of sucking in unfiltered air as I mentioned above.

Good luck

Are more shims necessarily better/safer?? I took one out so now I currently have 5 in there. I put lithium grease on the outside and inside of the bov cylinder tube. I can't hear or feel any air being sucked in by the bov at idle. Also, since I dropped from six to five washers/shims, I get more of a flutter/whip sound. I kinda like it. What exactly does compresser surge sound like? Thanks.
