Whenever my car is cold, the first couple of times the turbo spools, it makes a weird sounding noise. You can hear it sucking in air, but it also makes another noise. I don't even know how to desribe it. It changes speed and pitch as the RPMs go up and it spools faster.

I guess the only way I can kinda describe it, is almost a whirring sound. Its not metal on metal sound.

Yeah, mine makes the same noise... its also very close to dieing though LOL. It smokes about 1/4 of the time you hit boost and has loads of shaft play.

Hmm, not sure what to tell you then. Like I said, mine makes that exact noise. Its sort of a high pitched whirring exactly like you described. I always just assumed that it was because it was just about dead.

Did you check the IN and OUT shaft play as well as the UP/DOWN shaft play?
Sure sounds like a bad turbo.

Check all of your accesory belts for slippage/glazing/rubbing

Check the harmonic dampener (crank pulley) Sometimes it will separate and start rubbing into the lower timing belt cover.

Water pump could be squeeling?

Bad alternator bearings?

A/C clutch bearings worn?

Anything that spins I would check....but the way you describe it sounds like a shot turbo.
