Ok, so i just picked up my Turbo badge from Vdub earlier today and i plan on putting it on the car soon but heres the question. I kind of want to paint it black (i have a black car obviously) but im not sure how to approach painting something like that. Is it as simple as using some aircraft stripper, then paint and clearcoat? I dunno, i should prolly have better ideas, but my head is clouded for some reason. Any thoughts?

i'll reply just to get your hopes up...

I dont see why aircraft stripper wouldnt work...then just paint it with a dupli-color paint and a clearcoat over it. Couldnt be too hard its just plastic right?

How much did you pay for it?

We better see some pictures when it is done.

It was only 16 bucks, and yeah i figured it wouldnt be tough, but i just wanted to get some imput before i went ahead and did it. Ill do it this weekend and post up the pics.

I don't see why any ole spray paint wouldn't work. That's how i've done most of my plastics. Since it's not gonna see much wear and tear i don't see it being a problem.

Top right corner of my trunk lid, fits perfectly, pretty much exactly where Staytuned has it on his Talon. I took the idea from him, but i dont want it silver b/c it sticks out to much on the car, so i wanna go the same color as my car.

is the badge plastic? if so, the aircraft remover will totally ruin it.
I wouldnt worry about taking the paint off. Just get some medium grit sandpaper and rough the surface enough to where a new coat will stick. You'll be fine.

As a model builder, I paint stuff all the time. My dad and uncles paint cars. I agree with pinknuggit

Does it have paint on it now or is it chrome plated? If it's chrome plated, then soak it overnight in 409. The chrome will just fall off, then just wash it and sand it. I've done this with some chrome plated model kits to get the chrome off. It doesn't hurt the plastic at all. If it's painted, you could try the soak as well, but depending on the type of paint it is, it may or may not work.

Here's a tutorial on the chrome stripping: http://www.childofmecha.com/Modeling/Chrome/Chrome.html

Thanks Pinknuggit and Bhop, great advice. Almost went ahead w/ the aircraft stripper, glad i didnt :thumb:

sorry chris...i was thinking about aircraft wax stripper for some reason as i have used that on certain plastic parts before.

about the chrome removal thing...will that work on rims?

I know it's a lil' late and all but, a company called VHT makes a tint spray that is supposed to give "chrome" badges and emblems a......black chrome look. It looks pretty sweet. They make two forms of the spray, VHT Nightshades and VHT window tint (if i'm not mistaken). you can usually find them both on ebay.

"Spray the tint on chrome pieces for a black-chrome look. Works great on emblems and badges on your vehicle. The "Trix" on the emblem in the photos was shot with one thin coat of the spray tint for a black-chrome look.

Nite Shades applies more like a spray paint, while the Spray Tint is actually applied in a larger amount and allowed to run down the object, thus eliminating bubbles and streaks. The Spray Tint doesn’t tint as dark as the Nite Shades though, making it perfect for headlights. Also, I wouldn’t recommend using a lot of coats of the Spray Tint like you can with the Nite Shades. The Nite Shades won’t bubble or streak if applied correctly (like spray paint), and if it runs, then you applied way too much!"

I plan on getting a couple of cans of the nightshade spray for myself, seem to be pretty good.
