Hey guys and girls. I need some help. I am coming up on a new job, and currently I have a 95 Maxima SE 5 speed. I love the car, and I was looking into doing all the bolt ons, and possibly a Vortech supercharger. If I were to do that, I was going to go with a 1st gen Tsi/GSX for a daily driver and fun time racer. But due to this new job posiblilty, I was looking at either getting the DSM, or my friends 94 Mustang LX.
It has 74K original miles, clean as hell white paint. It has Cold air intake, mass air sensor, basani X pipe, Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust, Hurst short throw, bigger water pump, high flow thermostat(during the summer at the track, the temp of the car never got up above 160 degrees!) King Cobra clutch, and stuff not on the car is front cross drilled rotors, stainless steal break lines. I think there is a few other things, I dont know if he has headers. But he is only asking $7000. THe car at the track ran a best of 14.4, but he sucks as a driver, and there was nothing but wheel spin through 1st and 2nd. A friend of mine drove the car and feels the car should at least hit a 13.9 or so. I know if you go with a GT40 heads kit and cam, the car will easily run 12's all day. I know the DSM would be nice due to the all wheel drive in the snow, and throw on a boost controler, disconnect the vacumm line, and run 3" down pip all the way back, and just add a K&N filter, and Im sure that car should be at least low 13's. What would you good people at the DSM heaven tuner board due? Need help!!

You live in Wisonsin right? Wouldn't awd help with the snow? Unless of course I don't know state abreviations, whereas my entire post is meaningless.
LOL

heh, if you post here of course everyone will tell you to get a DSM, but if you go post on a 5.0 site they will all tell you to get a 5.0, go post like on a LT1 site and ask....that should be funny

This is a silly and pointless convo.

It is a known fact that the best bang for buck value you will get for speed will come from the 5.0 Foxbody Mustang. 1g DSM's are a very close second (some would argue the Daytona 2.2 Turbo but I think it's only good for 12's and high 11's)

If you have to get a mustang and only want speed be sure it'se between the years of 88-93 ;) But both cars are quite good, horrible on gas, and can be made decently fast at a cheaper cost than most other cars.

No reason to hate either one. :thumb: I'll be owning a 5.0 F-body someday.

Is that a joke?

Hey guys I presently own both. I love the stang but got the TSI because it snows and the TSI is more practical for me. I am in the process of selling the stang. Will get another later.

I think we are talking about different cars. He said a 94 LX. A 94 LX is a V6 car. A 87-93 LX hatch or notch could be a V8. So I guess we might need clarification on what he is looking at.

The guy that said he knows someone that runs 10.20's with a 1200+hp twin T66 setup is out of his mind. 1200hp no spinning is good for a **** of a lot better then 10.20's. Common math will help you figure that out.

The guy that was talking about the Wild Street competition is correct. That is the one he was saying had to run a 30 mile tour then 3 back to back runs no changes. There is actually a guy that runs high 7's low 8's in that group. He has a 100mm turbo on a 306. 3250lbs w/driver. Full street car makes the tour just like everyone else. Name is Lee Howie.

Although some different answers have come from this discussion, I would imagine if you go into a forum on DSMtuners and try to find out wether to buy DSM or Mustang. It would probably make sense if you get more votes for the Talon.

I say go with the Talon.

i have a 5.0, and although i love the car, i am selling it and looking for a GVR4. i speak from experience when i say stangs are fun to drive and easy to work on, but i havent owned a dsm yet. i guess it all boils down to what car you want, and how much money you want to spend. i mean, some people are happy driving hondas...go figure.

Lots of input on this topic.....
I grew up in the 80s and every kid in town had to own a 5L stang... it was the car to have. and yes they are easy to mod as there are endless go-fast parts for them. But like i said this was in the 80s. Now at the track they get no special attention anymore. And when was the last time you spun your head around when one drove by? they have earned common respect in the race community but I feel the DSMs are the next step with AWD and forced induction.

My opinion, a DSM AWD would be more practical. Gets better mpg, better handling, and over all fun(in my opinion). But you should do what you want to do, not base it over someone elses opinion. I am pretty sure you know which one you really want by now.

I gotta ask, exactly how crappy of gas mileage do you guys think 5.0's get? A guy i know with bolt-ons, 50 shot, and 3.73 gears ran a 12.4@109 and gets 22-24mpg driving around...

Thats about what my Talon gets.. AWD Talons/Eclipses are NOT economy cars... :/

Is that a joke?

Lol..nope. 5.0 FOXBODIES (I guess putting F-body made me sound like an idiot thinking of the Camaro/Firebird bodies) are one of my favorite domestics on the planet. I'd get a Buick Grand National instead but they are just so damn hard to find around here.

And no. DSMs (AWD's mainly) do not get amazing gas mileage. Hell, I'm running on premium at 19/22. The 5.0 is doing that on unleaded. Stock for stock.

I live in Florida so "having to get awd for the snow" is not a factor  I still love my little car though...

If this kid is debating getting a V6 Mustang over a DSM then I think the answer should be pretty obvious (assuming he wants speed)

IN the end both are great cars and are great for what they do. Buy either and be happy.

High again, thanks for all the imput and opioions. Sorry if this type of post has been over done. Anyways, I decided to go with the DSM. In racine Wi, we just got dumped on with 8.5" of fluffy powder. I just wished I could have had the fun of a nice AWD going in the parking lots and having some fun. Also, I made a typ-O. The Mustang my friend has was a Fox Body. Sorry. I made the mistake, And I also Decided to save my money and get the 96-98 body style Cobra down the line. I like the looks of them better and with the modular motor, it responds very nicely to mods and better to boost!! And at least stretching out the wheels gives it more use if you want to build the suspension for better handling. Thanks again, and for now.... I want to go DSM!! And lots of boost!!!!
