Transmission question for my 5-speed

Okay my transmission is very strong, but just recently 2nd gear wil grind horribly unless i feather the clutch, or shift at a certain RPM then MASH it into gear. but every other gear is no problem.....what the hell is causing this???

Should i replace the clutch, or are the syncros bad...also if it's the syncros, does that mean the tranny needs to be rebuilt, or can the syncros be replaced...i know nothing about how the manual transmission works

For future reference you probably shouldve put this in the Tranny/Drivetrain section of the forums.

To answer you question, I had the same problem, especially when it was cold. I was told to put GOOD quality transmission fluid in it and that will solve the problem.

Your synchros might be going so just be gentle and get some good fluid. How many miles on your clutch?

the guy i bought it from said 6k i think???? the pedal feels perfectly fine, but it's a bi*** to put it in 2nd and every other gear you sometimes have to push rather hard to get them in gear. i'll check my trans-fluid. also what TYPE or transmission fluid do i need? while im out at the local pepboys ill see about picking up a haynes, or chiltons manual too

Use Pennzoil or GM Synchromesh. Pennzoil can be found at Carquest, Autozone etc... GM(which is more expensive)can be found at most GM dealers. If just the synchro(s) are bad then you don't neccessarily need a full rebuild, but you will need access to a press in order to change it/them out. Good Luck.
