Transmission Problem

I have a 97 Eclipse GS (420a) and i had to replace the clutch a while back and my mechanic told me the Eclipse clutch assembly i got him did not fit the tranny, he needed a neon assembly. so i assumed that i had a neon tranny.
About a week ago the tranny went and i replaced it with a 95 esi tranny. It is now shifting like crap. It is very hard for it to go into gear, and to downshift i must match my revs or it wont go it.

If any of you have any insight as to what the problem might be i would appreciate it.

Does your clutch petal feel spongy??? It sounds like you have air in your system.
