first of all i'd like to say hi to everyone. i've been lurking for a while but today i encountered a problem that i think this forum can answer. i have an automatic 1995 eclipse non turbo. on my way home i hit traffic (california freeways) and the gear seemed to be stuck on 2D, i was running 50 mph on the way home at around 6k rpm. lucky for me i was close to home. anyone have an idea what's wrong with it? the car has 120k miles on it and less than a year ago i had the a/t fluid flushed. i just came back from a test drive and now it's seems to be running ok.

It sounds as if your trans went into a computer commanded "limp home mode".

You will need to have the car checked for codes.

There are common problems with these transmissions that cause this, most notably the input speed sensor and the output speed sensor, but again, have the codes checked- that should tell you what is going on.

thank you sir, i took it to the dealer and they're pretty sure its the speed sensor. they said they're 90% sure, if it doesn't work then it's the tranny. crossing my fingers. thanks for the reply. :thumb:

Don't let them sell you a transmission that you don't need. If they say it's the trans, thank them and then take it somewhere else to fix the electrical problem.

hey john it's been months and i still have the same problem. basically they replaced the input/output sensor and the solenoid. two dealers and a private shop was not unable to diagnose the actual problem. you have any other idea what it might be? thanks.

You might get more help if you post right on the www.importperformancetransmissions.com forum.

John is like THE MAN to talk to about A/T's but sometimes he is busy and there are other smart A/T owners on his forum that could help too also sometimes I find waiting for John is the best thing to do ;)

There is also a new A/T DSM forum but I forgot the url. Its also listed on John's forum.

Again, you will need to get the codes.

Almost any electrical and many mechanical problems will cause the computer to call for limp mode, so guessing what the problem is senseless.
