I was sick of dealing with my trans hating life, so I went out and picked up a shep trans. I'm now going back to put the transmission in the car. The trans sits flush with the motor towards the front of the car, in the back of the car there is gap, thickness of two dimes and I am wondering what my options are. I also aligned everything with the clutch pin. I am also having trouble remembering how everything goes.. its been 3 weeks because of shep building the trans... so if you have any tips that would be great.

I think I can help here. Just did my trans last week, 2nd time for me but every time its different putting it back in.

I'm not sure what your question is exactly? Are you saying your having trouble lining the trans up with the alignment dowels? If its in already then its in, rear mount & passenger tranny mount will push it back into the proper position once you bolt that back in place.

I had problems lining the tranny up to begin with in my case. I used my stock jack and placed it between the engine block and firewall to jack the engine forward towards the radiator so I could clear the subframe with the tranny during assembly. That worked like a charm to slide the tranny right into position. Once it was in I used a floor jack to jack the front motor mount bracket to rotate the engine so I could align the rear motor mount bracket with the motor mount itself and slide the bolt thru the hole and lock it down. Hope that helps.

I usually "kick" the tranny into position, pretty ghetto but it works every single time.:D

That is what I was looking for. Both of the alignment pins are lined up and in, the rear of the transmission is just out a little bit. I was wondering if somehow it could have been mis-aligned.

Any tips for anything else? Looking at all the bags of bolts is starting to scare me.. :sosad:

What's scary is staring at a bag of bolts 2 years after you pulled them off the car. Sounds funny but if I have empty bags afterwards I know I'm good:thumb:

I would tell you one thing, do you remember the lower long botl the one that is on the bottom close to the firewall, you have to start by tightnin' that one, first just put the ones on the top of the tranny in just a lil bit, then do the one close to the firewall all the way that should work fine for you good luck

You also might have to take into consideration the plate in-between the motor and trans.

It's roughly 1/8" thick and from some angles can make it APPEAR that the tranny isn't contacting the engine block properly. This is most noticeable on the underside of the tranny near the front motor mount.

I once knew a kid who spent almost a week removing/re-installing his tranny thinking it was off untill I pointed that little detail out to him. Yeah... he was pissed.

As long as the dowel pins are lined up, the bolts will do all the work clamping the transmission in place. Just remember to torque everything down properly and it should be fine. :rocks:

Mine took some messing with the height of the tranny and engine the engine for it to slide back into place, raising each individually. Eventually it just slid toghether with a nice solid clunk ;)

Easiest way to install a Trans in a 2G.

1. remove the rear mount from the tranny
2. remove the cross member from the car that the front mount goes into.
3. have the motor slightly tilted down so the tranny will kind of be at a downward agle when it's attached.

Makes it a piece of cake to install. Get it lined up and on the dowls. Then bolt it up. Install the PS mount (but don't tighten it up). THen install the cross member and put the front mount bolt on before you get it all bolted to the car. Then just put a few threads of the member bolts in so it has some play. Then install the rear mount back on the tranny. It's very easy to do from under the car. The rear bolt will go in with a little rocking of the trans.

It seems like more work but seriously it's much faster than messing with getting those mounts over their other parts.
