Transmission Issue (Searched For No Results)

I'm by no means a newbie to forums I'm from a local TN forum and they run me this way to ask you guys.


I bought a 93 Talon TSi, car is great, runs for 500 dollars, completely stock motor and just needing paint and hatch/sunroof seals.

Although there is one big issue. The car won't engage gear properly, it's tough to put into gear and 2nd/3rd/5th won't engage at all, running or not.

I'm thinking linkage is bound up, he said he replaced both master and slave cylinder but the slave was disconnected at the time. Any possible idea?

Car is a AWD model btw.

If it was just 3rd and 5th, I would say linkage, but throw 2nd in there and it sounds like a internal trans problem.

Check the linkage to make sure nothing is loose just to make sure.

Let me go further into it.

It'll engage first while running. But won't go into second.

But off 2nd will engage, but you have to be kinda rough. It also feels like the linkage is loose. But I'm not sure. It's my first DSM.

I'm actually at a complete loss here guys.

Anyone have any further ideas?

Can't check the linkage right now. Car stopped in Memphis and I left it there at a friends house. Didn't want to risk driving it all the way home.


Give me a roundabout idea of any possible problem and I should be able to figure it out.

Pop the hood open and grab hold of the two linkage cables running to the tranny with the motor off. Have it in neutral. The one on the left is the SHIFT cable and the one on the right is the SELECT.

See if you can move the SELECT up and down from the middle position (which 3 and 4th gear). Then move the SHIFT cable back and forth. Move the SELECT down to the low position (being 1 and 2nd) then move the SHIFT back and forth and repeat this with the SELECT in the middle and upper (being 5th and Reverse) positions.

If's that's easy, then the linkage attached to the shifter could be out of adjustment, or you got some internal issues that needs to be attended.
